From small ranch-style homes to new traditionals
This almost exclusively residential neighborhood features nearly every type of house popular in the latter half of the 20th century. This includes the ever-present ranch-style home with an attached two-car garage, bi-levels with a staircase that greets you at the front door, Craftsman bungalows with large eaves and decorative brackets and new traditional homes that feature cedar shake accents. Markham also boasts colorful townhouses with balconies and garages. Most homes in the neighborhood sit on tree-lined streets with a sporadic layout of sidewalks on both sides of the street in some parts of the neighborhood, only one side of the street in others, and in some cases, not at all. Off-street parking is kept to a minimum because the few houses that don’t have garages have large driveways. And neighbors are casually separated by privacy fences, stone walls, or planted bushes and trees. Two-bedroom homes in Markham go for between $330,000 to $600,000, while four-bedroom and larger homes start at about $450,000 and sometimes fetch $1 million or more. “People tend to stay in their homes for a long time,” Stephen FitzMaurice, eXp Realty’s principal real estate broker in Oregon says. This low turnaround rate means that many of the neighborhood’s older homes could use some upgrades, particularly when it comes to boosting their energy efficiency before they go to market. FitzMaurice says this creates a good flipping opportunity for some homes.
