One may even find a basketball hoop along one of the quieter corridors of the neighborhood, perfect for a quick game of pick-up with the neighbors when a car isn’t passing through.
Green space is easy to find
Some of Mill Parks’ streets include cement sidewalks, helpful for a stroll to one of the neighborhood parks. Floyd Light Park, which borders Floyd Light Middle, is the largest, at almost 8 acres. featuring athletic field space and a lush community garden full of tomatoes, herbs, flowers and more. The East Portland Community Center is adjacent, too, a spot that offers a diverse assortment of programming, for all ages. One of the signature aspects of the facility is the 24,000-square-foot aquatics addition, which features a leisure pool complete with a water slide. The 6-acre Mill Park is another option for outdoor fun in the neighborhood, and this one is in the process of receiving a renovation that includes a playground, splash pad and community garden.Schools are well-regarded
The Mill Park area is served by the David Douglas School District, which Niche rates No. 2 on its list of the best school districts across Multnomah County. Most students in Mill Park can start at either Mill Park Elementary or Ventura Park Elementary for kindergarten to fifth grade. Mill Park carries a C-plus rating on Niche and has an afterschool program that fosters programming in topics like cooking, arts and crafts and athletics. Ventura Park has a B-minus grade and an active community presence, including free adult ESL classes for members of its school community. The majority of students in the neighborhood can then progress to the B-plus-rated Floyd Light Middle, which offers multiple sports teams including wrestling and soccer. Among the area’s traditions is the annual Festival of Nations, held not far from Mill Park, on Division Street. The Festival of Nations celebrates East Oakland’s diversity in a daylong event featuring all sorts of food and live performances, showcasing cultures of everywhere from South America to Africa to Asia. Mill Park is directly due east of downtown and its proximity to Interstate 205 is considered one of its highlights, Park says. I-205 is just to the west of the neighborhood and connects to Interstate 84, for commutes toward downtown. There are also multiple TriMet bus stops in Mill Park, many along Southwest 122 Avenue and Southeast Stark Street. A handful of MAX light rail stations can be found just north of the neighborhood, too, by East Burnside Street. Those stations offer access to downtown via the blue line. “Transportation scores are high,” Park says of Mill Park.A bite to eat is always close by
Mill Park balances its residential makeup with quick access to commercial amenities along stretches like 122nd Avenue. A stop by Sisters Ethiopian Restaurant on 122nd is a must. Perhaps try the lamb tibs — stir-fried lamb stew with injera bread — crafted with fresh ingredients and served with generous portions. Those who somehow have room left can grab a sweet boba treat on the way home, from Just Tea. There’s also a Grocery Outlet just off 122nd, on Division Street, convenient for grabbing ingredients to make a home-cooked meal. Locals can take advantage of the Target and Home Depot just outside the neighborhood for more retail needs.Crime
