Outdoor living 5 miles from downtown Portland
Named for the extinct volcano that lies less than a mile south, North Tabor is a residential neighborhood popular among outdoor lovers looking to be just a short drive from the active atmosphere of downtown Portland, Oregon. Like most of eastern Portland, North Tabor grew up along a series of streetcar lines that fanned out across the city at the turn of the century. Many of the neighborhood's homes date back to this period, including the seven-bedroom Shogren House, where sisters May and Ann Shogren lived while they ran a clothing business that catered to Portland's elite in the 1910s. Today, North Tabor residents enjoy proximity to the interstate and city conveniences while remaining just a short distance from the verdant outdoor spaces that the Pacific Northwest is known for. “It’s almost like living in a park,” says Claire Paris, a local broker with Paris Group Realty. “Because you can walk to two of the area’s biggest parks in just 20-minutes or less.”
Large mid-century homes are in the North Tabor neighborhood.
Mid-century moderns and colorful Victorians
Homes here are more affordable compared to surrounding communities like Laurelhurst and Mt. Tabor, with an average listing price of $600,000. "North Tabor was developed a little later than other neighborhoods, so you'll get a lot of Mid-Century moderns and World War II ranches," Paris says. The typical North Tabor home is around 1,800 square-feet with a quarter-acre lot, with architectural styles ranging from charming bungalows and Cape Cods to Victorians and sturdy craftsman-style builds. One-bedroom, 700-square-foot condo units can be snagged for $270,000, while newly renovated, 3,000-square-foot Colonial Revivals and Victorians have price tags of $700,000 and above.
Wooded trails and skyline views
Walking to Mt. Tabor Park is a popular weekend activity among local dog owners and those simply looking to enjoy the quiet trails. The 176-acre park is home to three wooded hiking routes, picnic tables, tennis courts and an off-leash dog area. Hiking to the park’s highest point rewards visitors with 360-degree views of the Portland skyline and the surrounding neighborhoods. Walking a mile west of North Tabor’s residential streets brings residents to Laurelhurst Park, where they can stroll along the paved paths while enjoying views of Firwood Lake. The park also features a playground, pickleball courts and a skate park.

The neighborhood is friendly and quiet. People say hi walking their dogs, drive cautiously, and signal to others. I've become friends with all my surrounding neighbors and we share food, drinks, and borrow tools. It's close to Mount Tabor, so the opportunity to visit a mini forest is a 10-minute walk away.
