A mixed-use community with many longtime residents
Just at the southern shores of the Columbia River is Parkrose, a neighborhood in Northeast Portland that has transformed from an agricultural community into a mixed-use area known for its unique eateries, proximity to the airport and easy access to Interstates 84 and 205. Sandy Boulevard, the neighborhood’s main commercial thoroughfare, largely divides the community. The area’s northern sector is mainly comprised of an array of warehouses and hotels, while most of Parkrose's homes, which are often midcentury single-story constructions, are just south of the boulevard. Historically, properties here have sold for lower prices than in some surrounding communities, and adding to that appeal is that properties are known to sit on more spacious lots. With so many conveniences, it’s no surprise that “a lot of the people in the neighborhood have been here for a while,” says Jaynie Farnsworth, a longtime resident of Parkrose. These residents help make up what Niche ranks as the No. 3 most diverse neighborhood in Portland.

Craftsman builds, bungalows and more
Parkrose is home to unique Craftsman builds, some of which date back to the early 20th century, but others are midcentury constructions like bungalows and smaller single-story rectangular dwellings with small porches. One of the defining characteristics of the neighborhood's layout is that “the lots are quite spacious compared to inner Portland,” Farnsworth says. Some of these yards are populated by evergreens, while others are home to a mature Douglas fir tree or two. “I do notice that a lot of people garden. I think that people have that farming mindset,” Farnsworth adds. Parkrose's residential corridors don't usually include sidewalks, and since some homes do not feature garages, it is not uncommon to see residents parking on the streets. Depending on the property's age, size and condition, prices typically range from about $260,000 to upward of $800,000, with the median single-family price settling at $409,500. Those wanting to build their own homes can purchase a lot.

Establishments along Sandy Boulevard
Lining Sandy Boulevard are the many establishments that form the Historic Parkrose Business District. Locals can grab materials for all their home DIY needs at Parkrose Hardware or stop in at Disc Golf Depot to stock up on supplies before a match. For food out, Farnsworth recommends Antojitos Mexicanos Taqueria, a self-proclaimed hole in the wall whose fare is made fresh every day. Those stepping into the restaurant are welcomed with a rainbow of vibrant colors and the smell of flavorful street tacos. Another popular option is Fork and Spoon, one of the only places in Portland offering authentic Filipino cuisine. The neighborhood is also home to Grocery Outlet for those wanting to cook at home, as well as a couple of bars, including Tony's Tavern.

Parkrose Market Place and Rossi Farms
On weekends, unique vendors line Sandy Boulevard for the Parkrose Market Place. Patrons meet up with their neighbors to spend the days feasting on local flavors and listening to live music. Those wanting to host a private event can check out Rossi Farms, which has been around since the 19th century. While the generational business still has active tracts of farmland, it also opens up its space for tours, weddings and other events. The expansive red barn, built in 1936, is the centerpiece — a climate-controlled facility that’s perfect for parties. From Rossi Farms, visitors can catch views of Mt. Hood in the distance.

Senn’s Dairy City Park and other recreational spaces
Senn's Dairy City Park has changed from what was once facilities for a local dairy business into a fun space with playground features that reference what the area was once used for. Residents with a green thumb will enjoy the fact that the park is home to the Senns Community Garden. For more recreational opportunities, locals can drive to the nearby Luuwit View Park, where furry friends run free in the fenced dog area, and children can try to reach the top of the rock climbing wall. Those wanting to spend some time on the greens enjoy their proximity to the public Rose City Golf Course. Farnsworth says that many Parkrose residents also enjoy being near the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area. Visitors trek along hiking paths that will lead them to scenic views of the river and all the greenery surrounding it. It’s frequented by anglers trying to catch their dinner and kayakers maneuvering through the water, but many visitors come to the site specifically to witness Multnomah Falls.

Parkrose School District and higher learning opportunities
Children can enroll in the Parkrose School District. They can start their schooling at Prescott Elementary School, which receives a C-plus rating from Niche and then head to B-rated Parkrose Middle School. Both educational institutions are part of the Schools Uniting Neighborhoods initiative, offering after-school programming and other resources for children and their families. Students can then head to B-plus-rated Parkrose High School, which is known for its strong music program. Talented choir students are chosen to be part of the Tri-M Music Honor Society. The neighborhood is home to Mt. Hood Community College for those interested in higher learning opportunities. Portland Bible College is also just outside the neighborhood, and Multnomah University is less than 5 miles away.

Important to Know: Employers, commutes and more
A portion of the space north of Sandy Boulevard is home to warehouses and several different hotels — fitting because the neighborhood is just a few miles east of the Portland International Airport. This location is likely one of the reasons that some sections of the community receive loud Soundscore ratings, but Farnsworth says, “It’s not that bad. If you’re really noise-sensitive, you might notice it.” In contrast, she calls the occasional military flyovers from the nearby base “really loud.” Some residents work at establishments in the northern half of the community, but they’ll also be near employers like Providence Portland Medical Center, which is around a 4.5-mile drive northeast via Sandy Boulevard. Parkrose is conveniently bounded by Interstates 84 and 205; residents can take the former to get to downtown Portland, which is around 10 miles away. Also nearby is downtown Vancouver, which is around an 11-mile drive via I-205 and WA-14. While many people here drive to get around, they can also take advantage of TriMet’s public bus systems and their proximity to the Parkrose/Sumner Transit Center, which gives them easy access to the C-TRAN.
