A historic shopping district in Roseway
Situated to the northeast within the “City of Roses,” Roseway is a pocket of Portland with a suburban accent. And the neighborhood’s bustling main thoroughfare, Sandy Boulevard, hearkens back to the Portland of old.
Sandy Boulevard slices a diagonal line through the middle of Roseway. Paved between 1912 and 1913, the road acted as an early highway — in fact, it grew into what was among the most lively arteries in the region. Subsequently, an abundance of commercial activity sprouted there. It’s a quality that hasn’t changed about Roseway to the present day: Sandy Boulevard is still filled with eateries and other business, in convenient proximity for the residents within what’s otherwise a mostly residential area.
Early 20th-century architecture and walkable streets
The homes you’ll find surrounding either side of Sandy Boulevard include mostly options built in the early part of the 20th century through the midcentury era. An abundance of well-kept Craftsman-style bungalows dot the neighborhood. Most homes in Roseway have small lawns, and all blocks include sidewalks, allowing for convenient pedestrian access to Sandy Boulevard or to one of the neighborhood parks.
Outdoor recreation at Wellington and Glenhaven parks
Homes north of Sandy Boulevard sit closer to Wellington Park, which includes a playground and plenty of open field space. Those south of Sandy Boulevard aren't far from Glenhaven Park. In addition to the typical amenities like a playground and athletic fields, Glenhaven Park includes an 11,000-square-foot skatepark. The skatepark has a generous assortment of obstacles to tackle, including multiple handrails and a quarter pipe.
Roseway area public schools
Wellington Park is adjacent to Scott Elementary School and Glenhaven Park is near Roseway Heights Middle School. Both schools offer dual-language immersion programs — Scott Elementary in Spanish and Roseway Heights Middle in both Spanish and Vietnamese.
Long standing eateries and premier international cuisine
When you’re ready to explore Sandy Boulevard, one of the must-visit spots is Fairley’s Pharmacy. A pharmacy may not sound so exciting, but this one — in place since 1913 — has old-school charm in its favor in the form of a full-service soda fountain counter. The fountain offers everything from cookies to lattes to milkshakes. If your sweet tooth still isn’t quite satiated after a visit to Fairley’s, you’ll be excited to find Annie’s Donuts right across Northeast Fremont Street, a staple for fresh, fluffy pastries that will rival anyone’s. For a full meal, you could stop by Cameo Cafe East, serving up hearty breakfast and lunch plates, from pancakes that are almost bigger than the plates they sit on to savory pork chops. Or, for dinner, Ph? MeKha Restaurant warrants a stop — a quaint spot that’s considered one of the best Vietnamese restaurants in all of Portland.
Roseway Neighborhood Association events
Backing the enclave’s heavy residential makeup is an active neighborhood group: the Roseway Neighborhood Association. The RNA facilitates and promotes a regular drumbeat of neighborhood events — the list of past affairs has included neighborhood cleanups and a pop-up ice cream party.
Easy access to amenities and downtown Porland
A couple of the other amenities you’ll find off of Sandy Boulevard are the almost 6,000-square-foot Gregory Heights Library and a Safeway supermarket. Additionally, Sandy Boulevard connects Roseway to Interstate 84, for commutes southwest to downtown Portland. And if you need to go out of town, Roseway is conveniently close to Portland International Airport, which is just about 4 miles to the north.

Great dense urban neighborhood. Lots of young families, great access to multiple parks and easy commute to downtown. Sandy and Prescott, that border Roseway, are continuing to develop with restaurants and retail opportunities within walking distance. Roads need work, and there is a lack of continuity of sidewalks throughout.
