History and shopping 3 miles from Downtown
Sullivan’s Gulch, 3 miles from Downtown Portland, is a suburb with unique shops and eateries. “It’s a pretty laid-back neighborhood,” says Adfriena Ramos, resident and Manager of Creative Culture. “With unique businesses and bars and cafes to hang out at. The neighborhood is super nice.” Sullivan’s Gulch began as a literal gulch near the Willamette River. In 1851, an Irish immigrant, Timothy Sullivan, and his wife, Margaret, claimed the land. Development sprung in the 1880s when part of the gulch was filled to stop flooding, and a railroad was built. That, in turn, drew factories to the area. The Sullivan’s Gulch of today is essentially an amalgamation of single-family homes, condos, apartments and businesses organized in a compact fashion.
Steeplejack Brewing Company and Lloyd Center
Northeast Broadway Street is a bustling strip lined with restaurants and shops. For breakfast, Spielman Bagels & Coffee, a local chain, is known for its bagels, which visitors enjoy for the crunchy shell and doughy center. Grocery shopping can be done at New Seasons Market or the Fred Meyer. A popular spot for a night out is Rose and Thistle Public House, a dive bar opened by Scotland native Bobby Sutherland and his wife, Sandra, in 1991. One of the signature items on the menu is the Scotch Egg, a hard-boiled egg wrapped in sausage and deep-fried. Another late-night location is Steeplejack Brewing Company, a church-turned brewery that hosts trivia every Thursday. Locals head to the Lloyd Center mall for popular retail locations, hosting everything from arcades to dermatologists.

My vehicle was stolen within the first month of moving to this neighborhood. The vehicle was never recovered. Theft seems to be the greatest criminal issue here. I also typically arrive home from work after 12am and am forced to park multiple blocks from home. There is not enough street lighting to feel comfortable as a young woman who must walk alone at night.
