A welcoming east Portland suburb
Developed in the late 19th century as Portland’s first streetcar community, the Sunnyside neighborhood was named for being a step removed from the shade of downtown and the city's west hills. Today, the area is home to quiet streets just blocks from active commercial areas and major thoroughfares. “I’ve lived here since 1996,” says Lisa Long, a Realtor with High Five Properties. “I was attracted to the area because of the proximity to amenities. There are great restaurants and shops along Belmont and Hawthorn, and everything is pretty walkable.” It’s the kind of place where neighbors know and support one another. “It’s a really diverse and welcoming community,” Long says. “I have neighbors that are retirees, in the middle of their careers and just starting families. People chat with one another in their front yards, and we put in effort to get to know our neighbors at our block parties.”

Historic homes and lush gardens
Colorful Victorians and craftsman-style bungalows house many of the neighborhood’s residents, and most homes were built in the early 1900s, with a few modern constructions popping up every now and again. The lots are small but home to lush greenery and flowers in the warmer months. “A lot of locals are really into gardening,” says Long. The average home value in Sunnyside is $670,000, which is $100,000 higher than the Portland average and around $150,000 higher than the Oregon average.

Shopping and Dining
Residents can walk to nearby grocery stores, restaurants and amenities, with dozens of businesses within a 1-mile radius of the neighborhood. “Once you get home from work, you really don’t have to get back into your car. Everything is right there,” Long says. Folks pick up their groceries at the local Fred Meyer or Safeway, both located on Hawthorne Boulevard and can get their daily dose of caffeine at local coffee shops like Cricket Cafe and Stumptown Coffee Roasters. Other popular spots include Jam on Hawthorne, a brunch spot serving up sweet and savory options alike along with a wide selection of mimosas and other breakfast cocktails.

A close knit Sunnyside
The community’s welcoming environment is noticeable in its numerous neighborhood events and gatherings. “Halloween here is like a national holiday,” says Long. “Everyone sits out on their front porches in costume, and we get lots of trick or treaters. Last year I went through 10 bags of candy.” Streets also host regular block parties in the summer, where the street is closed and residents share food and meet their neighbors while kids ride their bikes and play yard games.
