With fertile land, lots of biodiversity, the occasional cluck of backyard chickens and nearly 20 acres of lush forest in the middle of the neighborhood, those who pass through West Portland Park may think they’re far from urbanity. But therein lies the charm of this southwest Portland neighborhood—though it’s teeming with flora and fauna, it’s only eight miles from the center of one of the West Coast’s largest cities. Residents of West Portland Park enjoy several natural areas nearby and have the ability to keep chicken and goats on their property, yet they’re minutes from restaurants, grocery stores and Interstate 5, which takes them directly to Downtown Portland.

Seventeen acres of moss, mushrooms and evergreens
The Loll Wildwood Natural Area encompasses more than 17 acres of West Portland Park with thick evergreen forest and moss-covered branches. The sun peeks through the bare trunks of deciduous and evergreen trees at hikers, while ferns shroud the forest floor, only making room for mushrooms of varying shapes and sizes to bloom. The Kerr Natural Area is a slightly smaller wooded area enclosed by a residential semi-circle at the very south of the neighborhood. Red and yellow leaves from towering trees float onto the nearby yards and driveways. Residents can reflect on the benches at Holly Farm Park while children zip down the slides of the park playground. The park’s “Skatespot” features a contoured bowl, a delicious landscape for any skater to pick speed up on. When the notorious Portland rains pick up, residents can head to the Ritual Room escape room, where they try to solve a series of riddles in under an hour in order to join the Vox Aurea Secret Society.

Interstate 5 takes commuters Downtown or to Salem
Southwest Capitol Highway runs through most of the neighborhood, taking residents to all the important locales: Holly Farm Park, Markham Elementary, the county library as well as a few apartment complexes. West Portland Park is also bordered by Interstate 5, which residents take to get to Downtown Portland in around 10 to 15 minutes. “There are two types of people who live in the southern suburbs of Portland,” says Ernest Cooper, principal broker and owner of Cooper Realty, LLC. “People that work in Downtown Portland, and those who work in Salem or the farther suburbs.” The neighborhood’s proximity to Interstate 5 is a driving pull factor, making the commute both towards and farther from Portland convenient.
