Elwyn Park offers a suburban and rural atmosphere in New Hampshire
Equidistant from Portsmouth proper and the small – and only – stretch of coastline in New Hampshire, Elwyn Park is a residential enclave along U.S. Route 1. The neighborhood appeals to homebuyers for myriad reasons, including highly-rated educational options and proximity to central Portsmouth. “The elementary school is the biggest draw and the houses are on the outskirts of town,” says Lee Ann Parks, an associate broker at EXP Realty. “Those are two of the major attractions. It’s walkable to downtown and close to shopping and Interstate 95.”
Elwyn Park homes take the form of quintessential suburbia with a dash of rurality, offering a little more room between properties. “You do have a little bit more space than in town, so it’s desirable,” Parks says. “People go there because they can have a little bit more land than in town.” Locals are just across Route 1 from a shopping center and a staple restaurant, and can hit nearby parks for recreation in the warmer months or when snow blankets the ground in New England.
Residential homes in southeastern New Hampshire
Elwyn Park offers secluded streets overhung with trees, mostly lined with ranch-style homes, split-levels and colonial-style homes. “There are several designs in there,” Parks says. “They’re older homes that have some land or backyards, and when they come on the market, they go pretty quickly. That’s how much people want them.” Prices rarely dip below $600,000 and homes can sell for as high as over $1 million. The neighborhood has yet to receive a CAP Index crime score.
A-rated schools for Elwyn Park students
Elwyn Park is served by the Portsmouth School District, which receives an A from Niche. Mary C. Dondero Elementary School, Portsmouth Middle School and Portsmouth High School all receive A ratings, as well. Dondero Elementary is within Elwyn Park and was named a National Blue Ribbon School in 2023. “The elementary school is a big draw to that community,” Parks says. “A lot of people want that school for their children.”
Nature education at the Urban Forestry Center
The Urban Forestry Center is just across Elwyn Road, spanning almost 200 acres. “There are some conservation pieces around there,” Parks says. “The forestry has walking trails down to the water, so you’re very close to the ocean.” The forestry space offers self-guided trails, covering topics like tree varieties, and accommodates skiing and snowshoeing in the winter. Coastal recreation is also popular. “People can ride their bikes at Odiorne Point,” Parks says, “and the beaches are literally just a couple miles from Elwyn Park. That’s very desirable.” Wallis Sands State Beach is less than 4 miles away, and visitors can soak up the sun or go swimming. Odiorne Point has activities like fishing, hiking and paddling, as well as skiing and snowshoeing in the winter.
Local eateries welcome patrons near Elwyn Park
Elwyn Park residents have a short drive ahead of them to shop. “A Market Basket and a whole plaza are right across the street from Elwyn Park,” Parks says. “Most people go to the Market Basket for shopping, and there’s a Whole Foods that’s not far.” The Market Basket is in the Lafayette Plaza Shopping Center, which is also home to Hebert’s Restaurant, a local favorite. “There are so many restaurants in Portsmouth,” Parks says. “Ristorante Massimo is an authentic, Italian restaurant that’s popular, and Dinnerhorn is a very, very popular place. A lot of locals go to The Shanty Family Tavern.” Dinnerhorn serves up seafood, while The Shanty is a sports bar. Diners can also head north into Portsmouth proper for more eateries. A Target is about 4 miles west.
Route 1 and Interstate 95 run through New Hampshire
Elwyn Park is close to main thoroughfares, with U.S. Route 1 making up the west side of the neighborhood. On-ramps to Interstate 95 are about 3 miles north. Locals can also use other forms of transit to get around. “Within the neighborhood, you can bike,” Parks says, “but as far as transportation you have the COAST bus system along Route 1 and C&J, which has buses that go into New York City.” Portsmouth Regional Hospital is under 4 miles north. Boston and Portland are around 60 miles south and north, respectively.
Events in Portsmouth at Prescott Park
The Urban Forestry Center hosts educational programs and seminars, while Prescott Park is another hub of community events in Portsmouth proper. “The forestry does all kinds of different events throughout the summer,” Parks says. “Prescott Park has an outdoor theater right along the waterfront in Portsmouth along the south end, which is not far away.” The Prescott Park Arts Festival has taken place for more than four decades, showcasing music, artwork, dance and more. The park also hosts a concert series and movie nights.
