Portsmouth homes with access to downtown and retail options

Situated at the intersection of two major highways and across the water from Maine, Woodbury-Maplewood is a suburban neighborhood close to Portsmouth amenities. Residents have access to downtown events and restaurants, as well as shopping in and around Fox Run Mall. Townhouses and Cape Cods make up most of the community, and parks are often a few blocks away. “Along with the Atlantic Heights neighborhood, the area has been made into the gateway to Portsmouth,” says Lee Ann Parks, an associate broker with eXp Realty who has lived in the area for over 45 years. “It’s really nice being so close to downtown as well as 95.”

Classic New Hampshire Cape Cods and condos

Woodbury-Maplewood's housing market includes condo and townhouse communities built in the 1980s and ranch-style houses and Cape Cods on modestly sized, shaded lots. Residents can also find some manufactured home communities scattered about as well. Prices for manufactured homes can range from $100,000 to $200,000, and more modern Cape Cods and condos can cost between $500,000 and $800,000. Because of the nearby shipyard, there used to also be naval housing in the neighborhood.

Downtown dining and shopping around Fox Run Mall

Just north of the Woodbury-Maplewood community, shoppers can find retail options around Fox Run Mall, such as Whole Foods Market, Walmart and Trader Joe’s. “The Trader Joe’s is always really crowded because it's so popular,” Parks says. Closer to downtown, restaurants line the streets, and Parks notes that residents can eat somewhere different here every night. Elephantine Bakery serves coffee, tea and a variety of breakfast and lunch dishes, and Clipper tavern is known for its casual atmosphere and happy hour specials.

Exercise and fun at Spinnaker Point Recreation Center

In the center of the neighborhood, residents can find the Spinnaker Point Recreation Center, a year-round spot for classes and exercise. In addition to the indoor track, gym, and full-length pool, members can choose from one of many classes and programs to stay in shape and meet up with friends. For outdoor fun, the Alumni-Wentworth Field is just a couple of blocks away. It has a large baseball field that can be easily accessed by the parking lot or pedestrian bridge that runs over Market Street.

Commuting options on I-95 and Route 4

Parks notes that the Woodbury-Maplewood community is much more of a car- and bus-friendly environment due to its location. Residents can access U.S. Route 4 and Interstate 95, which border two sides of the neighborhood, leading to Portland to the north and Boston to the South. Commuters also have access to the Route 43 line of the Cooperative Alliance for Seacoast Transportation (COAST) bus route. Portsmouth International Airport is about 3 miles away, and the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital is 2 miles away.

Market Square Day and Portsmouth events

Downtown Portsmouth festivities are just a short drive from the Woodbury-Maplewood area, and Market Square Day is one of the year's largest events. Taking place in the middle of June, the day kicks off with a 10k followed by vendor booths and live music. Another big event is the New Hampshire Film Festival, which brings over 10,000 people from around the country to support filmmakers and inspire tomorrow's independent actors and directors.
