Peace, pride and progress is the motto

A residential pocket right off the highway where Interstate 57 intersects with Interstate 294, the Village of Posen promotes one motto: peace, pride and progress. And Jesus Delgado, a Posen local and Realtor at Su Familia Real Estate can attest to that. “We’ve lived here for more than three years now, and it’s so quiet. We really love it,” he says. Delgado went on to say that not only is the area peaceful, but the cost of living is reasonable, too. “Taxes are less expensive here,” continues Delgado. “A little while after I moved here, my daughter moved right across the street." Being surrounded by both thoroughfare and parks, there’s an emphasis on keeping the streets and greenspace maintained. “There’s no graffiti, and potholes get fixed right away,” Delgado says. “The mayor is a phone call away, and his office is always open to improvements.”

Chicago-style bungalows with low taxes

Both newly planted and mature trees shade the sidewalks that line Posen’s gridded neighborhood streets. Ranch-style, Cape Cods, Four squares and the Chicago-style bungalow are the most common houses found, ranging in size from about 1,000 to 2,000 square feet and in price between $100,000 and around $300,000. Most homes offer street parking and feature gated or fenced-in backyards. Delgado notes that neighboring villages offer comparable properties to Posen, but the cost and taxes will be considerably higher.

Casual nights out and local Posen diners

Posen’s social scene is relaxed and is mostly comprised of intimate bars. Residents can head to D & D’s Tap or Hero’s Sports Bar & Grill for cocktails, conversation and a go at the casino slot machines. The food scene is also casual, with San Marcos Mexican Restaurant and Tacos El Chiquito the go to spots for authentic Mexican cuisine. “Posen Grill is a local favorite. We’ve been going for almost a decade,” says Delgado. “That’s where we see our community. We know the waitress. They see our car pull up and the coffee is already on the table when we walk in.” Delgado adds that this long-standing neighborhood staple is for sale, reflecting that this is inevitable with change. For everyday shopping and grocery items, locals go to the Posen Market Plaza or Dixmoor Market.

Cheering on teams at Posen Park District

On the west side of Posen, residents gather for baseball games while children play on the playground at Howie Minas Field. Little league soccer practices and pick-up basketball games might happen a few blocks east at Memorial Park. Tucked inside a cul-de-sac, Zuziak Park offers families a mulched playground. Locals can also stay active at the Posen Community Center, where the open gym is free for residents. “We love the summer and spring break camp for kids. They take them to the fire station,” Delgado says. “They have yoga for seniors there too,” says Delgado. Community members can also participate in the annual Easter Egg Hunt and various diversity events.

Change is inevitable

As with most towns that sit on the outskirts of major cities, Posen won’t be a quaint village for long. “It's a small place, but it’s growing. We’re getting chain restaurants and more local shops," Delgado says. “We’re seeing new construction and new houses being built. It’s bittersweet, but it’s good for our future.”
