Recreation areas and state parks around Morea

In addition to the area pocket park Morea Park, locals can visit the recreation centers and public outdoor spaces in Frackville and Mahanoy City or head to one of the several state parks nearby. Located about 4 miles west, the Frackville Memorial Pool is open to the public in the summer, and the adjacent Frackville Memorial Park has tennis and basketball courts as well as a sports field. Approximately 4 miles to the east, Mahanoy City’s West End Playground has swings and slide sets for children. Locust Lake State Park is 7 miles east and is a popular camping spot, while several miles farther east, Tuscarora State Park is known as a retreat for boating, fishing and hiking.

Mahanoy Area School District

Students in Morea are zoned for the Mahanoy Area School District, which has a student-teacher ratio of 14-to-1. Mahanoy Elementary School has a C-plus grade from Niche, and Mahanoy Junior/Senior High School has a B-minus. Events in Schuylkill County

Morea is situated close to Interstate 81, and the community overall is considered car-dependent. For medical help or treatment, people can head about 10 miles south to Pottsville to the Lehigh Valley Hospital-Schuylkill. Reading is about 48 miles south through Pennsylvania Route 61, and Philadelphia is farther south and about `00 miles away via Interstate 476. Those heading to the Wilkes-Barre Scranton International Airport can drive for about 52 miles north and take Interstate 81. Lehigh Valley International Airport and Allentown are 50 to 55 miles to the east via Pennsylvania Route 309.

The annual Schuylkill County Fair takes place at the Schuylkill County Fairgrounds every summer with truck and tractor pull races, livestock shows, prizes for best crops and live entertainment. The fair is also an important place for locals to show their agricultural products and crafted goods. Other major festivals in the county include the Schuylkill County Winterfest, the Greater Pottsville Winter Carnival and the Yuengling Stars & Stripes Summer Celebration, which has a free concert lineup and entertainment. Frackville and Mahanoy City also have events and activities for holidays, such as fireworks for Independence Day and parades for St. Patrick’s Day and Memorial Day.

The area’s staple eatery, Dutch Kitchen Restaurant, has been around for 53 years. “If you sit inside the diner, it’s so comfortable that it feels like your dining room at home,” says Bill, an employee at the restaurant. “The turkey croquettes and homemade pot pies are very popular, and our owner makes these homemade banana cakes which people go crazy for.” Spring Street Bakery is the area bakery, and Boyer’s Food Market is also in Frackville.
