Hillside community along the Hood Canal

From its perch on the western hillside of the Kitsap Peninsula, Vinland has expansive views of the Hood Canal and the Olympic Mountains. The story told throughout Poulsbo is that Norwegian immigrants, who settled in the area in the 1880s, were inspired by the beauty of their homeland reflected in the landscape. Sitka spruces and western red cedars tower above front yards and fill the forests separating the community from its neighbor to the south, Bangor Base. This Navy base, along with Bremerton’s Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, 20 miles south, is the county's largest employers. “People, when they’ve been stationed here for the Navy and Army, move back because they love that everything is very green,” says broker associate Jane Woodward with John L. Scott, who has lived and worked in Poulsbo for over 25 years.

Million-dollar waterfront and 1970s single-family homes

Trees and powerlines run along the streets, where 1970s single-family homes, including split-level, ranch-style and contemporaries overlook sunsets along the Hood Canal. Since Vinland sits on a hilltop, interior homes also come with views. These single-family homes price between $539,000 and $760,000, while waterfront homes with unobstructed views list between $785,000 and $1.2 million, but go as high as $1.7 million, if properties total more than 2 acres. Steps extend down from the back yards of homes along the Hood Canal, where boaters and canoers can drop their vessels and fishers can cast lines.

Poulsbo waterfront parks and public marine-themed art

Poulsbo’s Fish Park is on the northern tip of Liberty Bay. This waterfront green space covers 40 acres and has 2 miles of trails that weave past statues and murals of marine life. A pedestrian path leads south to Nelson Park’s 11 acres, which include a playground and a historic landmark, the Martinson Cabin. Located at the park’s entrance, it was built by early Poulsbo settlers, with artifacts on display from the late 1800s.

North Kitsap curriculum and dual credit offerings

North Kitsap School District serves the community, beginning with Vinland Elementary School, a B-minus-graded school by Niche. Poulsbo Middle School earns a B, and North Kitsap High School maintains a B-plus. The high school offers multiple pathways for students to receive college credits before enrolling, including Career and Technical Education (CTE) Dual Credit courses such as language arts. These college credits are earned through Olympic College, a public community college located 4 miles east of the neighborhood.

Viking Fest in the Viking City

Poulsbo is affectionately known as “Viking City” or “Little Norway” because of its Norwegian roots, a heritage it celebrates yearly with Viking Fest on the third weekend in May. “People come from Seattle and by boat. The marinas are packed, so they must make reservations weeks in advance,” Woodward says. After the kickoff on Friday, live bands and dancers perform at the Austin-Kvelstad Pavilion at Liberty Bay Waterfront Park, where performances continue throughout the weekend. Friday night marks the first night of the carnival in King Olaf’s parking lot, where games are set up with local street vendors selling food. On Saturday, participants in the Viking Fest Road Race head out for 5 miles before the parade of Vikings travels up Front Street. During the Strong Man Competition, athletes compete in challenges, including frame deadlifts, Thor’s hammer hold and the Viking press.

Major retailers and Downtown Poulsbo’s Scandinavian-style architecture

Despite not having a designated shopping area, the community has access to multiple shopping centers in less than a 5-mile drive, including fast food chains and major retailers, such as Walmart, in the College Marketplace shopping center. Locally renowned spots include Space City Donuts and Taste Wei Chinese and Japanese restaurant, for takeout or served in-house, under red paper lanterns and string lights. The Scandinavian-style architecture in Poulsbo’s downtown, a 5-mile drive east, leads to local businesses like Sluys’ Bakery, established in 1966 and inventor of Poulsbo Bread, made with multigrain.
