Locals spend their days on Powers Lake
As part of the town of Randall, Powers Lake is known for its natural surroundings. “It’s a great neighborhood with a beautiful lake,” says Dave Anstett, treasurer on the board of directors and Powers Lake resident. With farmland in the east and homes in the west, people travel to Twin Lakes, about 4 miles away, or Lake Geneva, about 9 miles away, for essentials and entertainment. Powers Lake, which takes up nearly half of the neighborhood, is where locals spend most of their day, ending their night with dinner at one of the lakeside restaurants. “Anyone would take pride in a lake like ours,” says the Town of Randall’s Board Chairperson, Paula Soderman.

Boating, fishing and sailing in Powers Lake
Powers Lake, the neighborhood’s namesake, is a glistening body of water that residents can access from their backyard or the boat launch along the southern shores. “It’s a great fishing lake,” says Anstett, an avid angler. Potential catches include bass, pike and walleye. Locals enjoy plenty of other activities; as Soderman says, “people use the lake in many, many ways.” Individuals can be seen boating, sailing or kayaking year-round. The Powers Lake Yacht Club hosts races on the water every weekend between Labor Day and Memorial Day. Randall Township Park is at the bottom of the neighborhood and includes a baseball field, basketball court and playground for children to explore. At Powers Lake Sportsmens Club, hunters use the rifle and bow ranges or compete in the summer league. There are also several recreational options in the surrounding neighborhoods, including Warren Close Bark Park, about 4 miles away in Twin Lakes, where pet lovers bring their dogs to get some energy out and socialize.

Mid-Twentieth century homes and lakeside properties
Mature trees surround the green lawns that homeowners have personalized with bushes and gardens. Many of the cul-de-sacs close to the lake break off into long driveways that hide large properties, and several residents have a personal dock in their backyards. Mid-20th century homes, including ranch styles, bungalows and bilevels, sit farther from the lake and typically cost between $250,000 and $350,000. New traditional houses built in the 1990s and 2000s, often featuring vinyl siding or a combination of brick, stone and stucco with gable roofs, can cost between $500,000 and $650,000. At the same time, larger lakefront properties can go for $800,000, with some costing close to $3 million.

Locals enjoy Lake Geneva events
Many residents travel the 9 miles to the nearby city of Lake Geneva for events, including the Winter Fest and the annual U.S. National Snow Sculpting Championship, which sees competitors from 15 states create frozen works of art. Locals can enjoy Lake Geneva Concerts in the Park every Thursday throughout the summer. Yacht club members attend social events exclusive to the club, including the annual Come Aboard Party to kick off the season and a yearly outing to Nippersink Golf Club, about 3 miles away.
Residents attend lakeside restaurant’s weekly fish fry
A handful of restaurants are on and around the lake, including The Rock Bar II, which has seating on the beach. “It’s a popular place, especially with their Fish Fry Fridays,” Anstett says. The Annex sits at the bottom of the neighborhood and serves American classics. For more dining options, residents can travel about 4 miles to Twin Lakes and try eateries such as Bodi’s Bake Shop and Manny’s Shake Shack. While there, they can get groceries from Berkot’s Super Foods. Locals also travel about 9 miles to Lake Geneva for Walmart, Target, Aldi and Home Depot.

Powers Lake is car-dependent
Powers Lake is a car-dependent community, although LINK Western Kenosha Transportation offers door-to-door service to people who need it, recommending that passengers book a ride at least two days in advance. The Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport, which services over 30 nonstop flights to U.S. and international destinations, is about a 47-mile drive.
Reducing light pollution in Powers Lake
Maintaining the lake is a top priority of the Town of Randall. “When you are lucky enough to have resources like we do, lake quality is very important,” Soderman says. That lake quality spans beyond the water. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources created the “Sensible Shoreland Lighting” booklet to inform people how to update residential and waterfront lighting to maintain safe sailing while reducing light pollution. Tips include pointing floodlights downward and using opaque lamppost covers instead of clear ones.
