As the seat of Carbon County, it should come as no surprise that Price has a long history of coal production. However, the residents of this small Utah city are just as well known for their rest and relaxation as they are for their hard work. “It’s a central location in the state. We’re close to the cities and a 20-minute drive to the mountains,” says Laurie Molinar, a Realtor with Real Estate Titans and Carbon County native. “A lot of people come here for recreation and to retire. It’s a slower pace of life.” Home to just over 8,000 people, Price is about halfway between Provo and popular recreation sites like Arches National Park. Plenty of other outdoor activity is closer to home, including hiking trails, ATV trails and city parks. While there are no active coal mines in Carbon County, plenty of people in Price still work in the industry and travel to nearby Emery and Sanpete counties for work. Other significant employers include Castleview Hospital, Carbon School District and Intermountain Electronics.
Scenic recreation and local events in eastern Utah
Outdoor activity is abundant in and around Price. While the city has multiple parks, including sports fields, playgrounds, skateparks and a wave pool, Molinar says most people seek recreation outside town. “A lot of people leave on the weekends. Not because we’re trying to get away from the area, but everyone is so outdoorsy, so they go camping,” she says. Arches National Park is about 112 miles away and can be reached in under two hours. Cedar Mountain Recreation Area and Price Canyon Recreation Area are closer to the city and have recreational trails and campsites. Molinar says mountain biking and off-roading are also popular activities, and there are several locations for these. Carbon County has over 250 miles of off-road vehicle trails, taking riders through mountainous desert landscapes and red rock canyons.
Price hosts multiple annual events that bring the community together. International Days celebrates the city’s diversity with a four-day festival in July. This event includes sports competitions, a parade, food vendors and music from around the world. The annual Price Renaissance Festival takes place each May in Washington Park and includes live entertainment, vendors and activities like sword-fighting lessons. The Carbon Events and Recreation Complex hosts the county fair each June and has sports fields, an indoor arena and a motocross track.

Lower cost of housing than Utah's larger cities
Homes range from 1940s bungalows to 21st-century contemporary Craftsman houses, with several styles in between. The city has a suburban feel, with homes side-by-side on the neighborhood streets but not too close together. Molinar says plenty of new homes are being built around the city to provide housing and attract workers for local companies. These homes are primarily in the northeastern part of the city in the Desert Canyons subdivision. The median housing price is around $288,000, up 7% over the past year. Housing in Price is more affordable than in cities like Provo, Orem and Spanish Fork.
