Located in the center of Calvert County, Prince Frederick has been the county seat since 1722 and was named for the English King George’s son Frederick, Prince of Wales. This small, cozy town features a walkable downtown and easy access to Baltimore and Washington. “Calvert County is a hidden gem,” says Mina Kim, general manager at the Prince Frederick SpringHill Suites by Marriott. “Many people never knew the area existed, but once they come here, they love the history, the museums, the water features and the wineries, which are a huge draw as wedding venues and local attractions.”
Prince Frederick has a variety of home styles, including split-level and ranch-style houses. Houses range in price between $350,000 and $600,000, depending on age and condition. There are also townhouses available, priced starting at $300,000. While the streets don’t guarantee sidewalks, residential speed limits are in place that make taking evening strolls or walking the dog safe activities.
Students living in Prince Frederick attend Calvert County Public School District schools, rated A-minus by Niche. This district was listed as the fifth-best school district in Maryland. A student in Prince Frederick may attend Calvert Elementary School, rated B-plus by Niche, Calvert Middle School, rated B, and Calvert High School, rated A-minus and listed as the third-best public high school in the county.
Outside of school and work, locals have plenty of options for recreation, including Battle Creek Cypress Swamp. This swampland park features nearly a mile of walking trails, including a wetland boardwalk, birdwatching, interpretive exhibits and picnic tables. Locals head to the Edward T. Hall Aquatic Center for indoor swimming and exercise during colder weather. “There’s also Jefferson Patterson Park & Museum, where people can learn about the history of Calvert County,” says Kim. “There are more than 500 acres of nature, ready for you to explore. There are also several archeological sites where you can learn more about the history of the area through educational exhibits the museum puts on. Plus, people who like spending time outside can hunt the inlets and ponds for shark teeth, which is a lot of fun.”
Prince Frederick hosts five large shopping centers with a variety of restaurants, shops and bars. When you’ve worked up an appetite, head to the main street, Solomons Island Road, for a selection of dining establishments. Locals love Heritage 485, a modern American restaurant in a repurposed Victorian home from 1891, known for its locally caught seafood and dessert specials. This restaurant celebrates the history of the area while providing delicious meals for the whole family. For those who would rather cook, Safeway and Walmart are just a quick drive from home. “There’s no shortage of restaurants to try here,” says Kim, “and people love the variety of dining options.”
This peaceful suburban town is perfect for commuters looking for a less crowded space in the Baltimore and D.C. metro areas. “Between the rich history and archeological exhibits, to the bustling boardwalk at Solomon’s Island, there’s a lot to enjoy in Prince Frederick,” says Kim.
