Acreage and ace schools an hour from Chicago
The city of Prospect Heights offers the kind of golden medium that’s hard to find. With homes that come on half-acre lots, a highly rated school system and unique bars and restaurants, this northwestern suburb of Chicago has the best of the country, the city and the in-between. Residents are only a few miles away from their go-to grocery stores, big-box retail, live music and a Metra rail going straight to Downtown Chicago, yet they can retreat to their own square—or half-acre—of Prospect Heights at the end of the day.
Prospect Heights was incorporated into Cook County in 1976.

Homes on half-acre lots in Chicagoland
Prospect Heights is Chicagoland’s take on country living. “Many homes are on a half-acre. It’s hard to find that much space unless you go farther out,” says Terry Anderson, a Prospect Heights local and managing broker with Baird & Warner. Though homes in Prospect Heights come with acreage, homebuyers can find a variety of price points in the area, from townhouses for first-time buyers to estates close to $1 million.
Brick, ranch-style homes stretch across lawns with thoughtfully arranged shrubbery, while the occasional French country manor-inspired home adds bucolic character to Mount Prospect’s residential streets. Red brick, ranch-style homes with two to four bedrooms, primarily built in the ‘60s, cost between $350,000 and $450,000. Starting from $600,000 to $800,000, buyers will find more modern ranch-style homes in lighter shades of brick built in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s with four to five bedrooms. The market also features three-bedroom townhouses surrounding the Rob Roy Golf Course that sell in the $300,000s. Condominium units with lower price points are clustered near the shopping centers on East Rand Road.

Under an hour to Chicago Union Station
North Elmhurst Road bisects the city from north to south, running past several local businesses and the manicured greens of Old Orchard Country Club. West of the country club, East Rand Road boasts most of the city's retail and dining. Those on their way to Chicago merge onto Interstate 294, across the Allison Woods to the east of the city. However, commuters hoping to avoid Chicago traffic can board Metra’s North Central Service rail to Chicago Union Station at the Prospect Heights station, where multiple trains stop on weekday mornings.
