The area's history as a maritime port dating back to 1680 still shows in its historic streetscape, and much of daily life revolves around the water. Its natural beauty and vibrant, active atmosphere are major selling points for the neighborhood, which attracts students, professors and staff from nearby Brown University. Walking paths can take residents east along the river or west to Downtown Providence, while walking along the neighborhood’s residential streets will take you past charming 19th-century homes.

Century-old homes and multi-family options
The area has a diverse housing scene, with options ranging from multifamily investment properties and modern townhouses to mid 1800s Colonial Revivals and colorful Victorians. Many have been updated while keeping details like hardwood floors, high ceilings and exposed brick. There are also a variety of condos in the area, which range from converted historic buildings to more contemporary options. Federal and Colonial-style homes with wide-plank floors, decorative moldings and original fireplaces are among the more notable finds. Private outdoor space can be limited, though many properties offer off-street parking, small yards or shared patios. "You'll see prices increase when searching neighborhoods like these because you're getting so close to downtown Providence and desirable amenities," says Eleanor Wickes Ellie Wickes, a Realtor with Sotheby's International Realty in Westport. Single-family homes start in the mid $400,000s and reach around $1.4 million, while double and triple-decker properties range from the upper $500,000s to $1.4 million.
