Community forward East Side neighborhood
Known as the Dog Patch Barrio, Eastwood Heights is a small, close-knit neighborhood on the east side of Pueblo. Established in the 1950s, Dog Patch is known for its unity and community-forward mindset. No one knows where the name “Dog Patch” originated. Theories suggest it came from a fictional comic strip while others claim it was a community initiative. But this name comes with a dark past as it did reflect the area’s neglect back in the 70s where it lacked amenities like paved streets. However, it’s the community’s resilience and tight-knit feel that keeps people staying. “You have generations that live here and continue to live here. You have the homey culture,” says longtime Pueblo resident Nicki Hart. While the neighborhood is slightly isolated from other parts of Pueblo, it sits between major state routes, making it easy to get around.
