Extensive history for Lake Minnequa Park
Lake Minnequa has had many lives, with its 270-acre park being one of its key assets in history. In the late 19th century, the park was owned by the CF&I steel mill until 1892. The park operated as a leisure spot for Puebloans until 1937, with an amusement park, boating and swimming. Once the city purchased the park in 2009, it became a public place for residents who came here to walk its trail and compete on its athletic fields. “That’s a big park; a lot of soccer games happen there,” says Donna Austin, broker/associate at RE/MAX of Pueblo. Architecture in Lake Minnequa has also evolved over the years. Ranch-style homes built between 1950 and modern, two-story contemporary homes sit throughout the neighborhood.

Newer affordable housing development
Homes in Lake Minnequa include a mixture of 20th and 21st-century architecture. “The homes further north were built starting around 1910, and the newest homes in that section were built around 1950,” Austin says. These are usually ranch homes or manufactured properties. Prices range from $25,000 to $200,000. Closer to Pueblo Boulevard, the houses are relatively new. “That development around Lake Minnequa was built around 2000 and was meant for affordable housing, so they’re close together,” Austin says. The homes adjacent to the park include ranch-style homes under 1,300 square feet with one or two-car garages priced from $220,000 to $345,000. Also, around this area are 21st-century two-story contemporary homes priced between $300,000 and $400,000.

Half the neighborhood dedicated to Lake Minnequa park
Nearly half of the neighborhood is dedicated to Lake Minnequa Veterans Memorial Park. For residents that live on the neighborhood's south side, it’s about a 1.5-mile walk, but others north of the neighborhood may not have this luxury. The 270-acre park has several acres of turf fields, basketball courts, and a 2.5-mile trail popular with hikers and cyclists. Laredo Park is an 11-acre pocket park with open fields and a playground. Beckwood Park is another smaller park to the west with a playground and sports fields.

Local spots driving up the Boulevard
Lake Minnequa has few local businesses, but a drive on Pueblo Boulevard – colloquially known as The Boulevard -- connects residents to plenty of options. Beer Barrel is a local favorite bar and grill home to the original breakfast slopper. The Slopper is a Pueblo Signature dish of an open-faced hamburger topped with green chile sauce. But the breakfast version includes a hamburger patty, fried potatoes, bacon, cheese, egg and sauce. Mozo’s Great American Heroes provides quick meal options, including hot and cold sandwiches. Casa De Burritos serves Mexican food like burritos, quesadillas and tacos. Weekly groceries can be bought from the Walmart Neighborhood Market. The Boulevard also leads to major shopping essentials such as Walmart Supercenter, Lowe’s, and Ross Dress for Less.

Two miles from the Colorado State Fair
Located two miles away is the Colorado State Fairgrounds, home to the Colorado State Fair. The fair began back in 1872 as a way to spot the state’s rich agriculture. It moved to its present-day location on Beulah Avenue around 1897. While the fairgrounds are two miles away, Austin noted that it’s quite a bit of walking distance for residents since it’s a busier road. “Our state fair runs for about ten days to two weeks,” Austin says. “People come from all over the state to compete and things like that,” Other fair events include rodeos, livestock and old-timey carnival rides.
Pueblo Boulevard to the Interstate
Pueblo Boulevard is on the neighborhood’s southern border; heading east, drivers can reach Interstate 25, the main highway in the Mountain Region. I-25 connects Pueblo with the cities of Colorado Springs and Denver, located 50 and 120 miles away, respectively. Several health offices and the St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center Emergency room are on Lake Avenue, east of the neighborhood.
