Blending of old roots and modern amenities
One of the first settled neighborhoods in Pueblo, the Lower East Side was established in the mid-19th century by people hoping to strike gold. A group of miners established the area as Fountain City after spending the winter of 1858 here, and over time, it became home to a population of European immigrants. New home construction continued in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and a planned community continues to add houses today. Besides homes, the neighborhood also has restaurants, parks and major highways running through it.
Turn-of-the-century homes and newer River Runs subdivision
Some of the first homes built in Pueblo are in the Lower East Side. History says that at one point, the neighborhood had the “oldest home in Pueblo,” before it was demolished. Present-day buyers will find homes from the late 19th- and early 20th centuries all the way up to the 2020s. Most homes sit behind paved sidewalks, and others have driveways or garages. Buyers will also notice that the architecture on the Lower East Side represents the periods in which they were built. The oldest homes, closer to East 4th Street, are ranch, Queen-Anne cottage and multi-family properties typically used as investment properties. Prices can be as low as $12,000 for a fixer-upper to $250,000 for a move-in home. The neighborhood’s southeast end has its newest homes, including the Rivers Run subdivision, which resembles a master-planned community. Its uniform contemporary ranches with attached two-car garages cost between $250,000 and $430,000.

Bright colored murals at Plaza Verde Park
Bradford Park is in the center of the Lower East Side. Kids can run around in the play area or have fun on the basketball courts and baseball fields. Plaza Verde Park spans 8 acres, including tennis courts and a picnic area. The park is also home to a large mural recognized by the National Trust for Historic Preservation as an endangered American site. The untitled mural uses bold images and colors to symbolize the spirit of Indigenous people and how the Chicano community had a role in the neighborhood development. This park is an entry point to the Fountain Creek Trail, a 12-mile pathway ideal for hikers and bikers. Near the Pueblo Riverwalk are entry points for the Arkansas River Run, a 21-mile trail for gravel cycling. “We have over 700 miles of dirt roads in Pueblo County, ideal for gravel cycling,” says longtime resident Nicki Hart. “People who like to mountain bike hit the trails and see the mountains.”
Shops and eats on East 4th Street
Lower East Side includes a small selection of restaurants along East 4th Street. These are primarily Mexican restaurants, including Vazquez Taco Shop, which offers tacos, enchiladas and tostadas. Botanas Locas serves cut out fruits, ice cream and milkshakes from its brightly colored dining room. Downtown, which is west of East 4th Street, has more restaurants, including Bingo Burger, known for its large selection of burger and fry combos. Groceries can be bought at a Save A Lot 2 miles north, and the Eastside Farmers Market is held on Saturdays in July and August.
2 miles from Downtown Pueblo museums
Lower East Side is next to downtown Pueblo, which has several museums. “We have a robust art scene. We have the old Memorial Hall that brings in shows. We have many galleries, they show a lot of southwestern art,” Hart says. The Pueblo Memorial Hall is 2 miles away. The 1,600-seat auditorium brings in entertainment like country artists Tracy Lawrence and Ashley McBryde and live theater performances like the Nutcracker. Sangre de Cristo Arts and Conference Center hosts rotating exhibits of local artists and photographers. The center also holds the Buell Children’s Museum, where kids can interact with exhibits and learn about their culture through different exhibits.
Culinary classes at East High
Kindergarten through fifth-grade students can start at Bradford Elementary, right in the neighborhood. Afterwards, students can attend Risley International Academy of Innovation. Both schools earn a C-minus from Niche. Depending on a student’s address, they may attend Centennial High or East High School. Most neighborhood kids are assigned to East High School, which rates a B-minus from Niche. This International Baccalaureate school offers business, culinary arts, hospitality and engineering career preparation classes.
Less than 5 miles from major employers
Highway 96 borders the neighborhood’s north end. The main highway runs east to west through most of Pueblo and eventually merges with Highway 50 which heads to Canon City. Along the highway are Pueblo Transit buses, which go directly to downtown. Locals are also close to several employers. Only 3 miles east are multiple city government offices and Parkview Medical Center. Steel manufacturers like Midwest Fabrication and Steel are less than 5 miles south.
