Former junction for Pueblo's trolley system
Recognized as one of Pueblo’s oldest neighborhoods, Mesa Junction’s century-old roots are visible through its architecture and layout. Before Pueblo became a city in 1886, it was four separate towns linked by trolleys. Mesa Junction was the main intersection, or junction, for several trolley routes, notably connecting north and south Pueblo. Today, its Victorian houses draw people in with their ornate exteriors, and neighbors can walk and bike to Pueblo attractions, like the Riverwalk and downtown shops. The trolley has been inactive since 1947, but activity in Mesa Junction is booming. “It’s very close to downtown and the Arkansas Riverwalk,” says Rich Mayo, realtor at RE/MAX Associates. “There are a lot of good eateries and a coffee shop. The main Public County Library is there, and it’s four stories tall.”

Walkable retail area with longtime Pueblo favorites
Abriendo Avenue was one of the main Pueblo Trolley routes during the city’s inception. Since closing in 1947, it has evolved into parking strips and green spaces to accommodate a growing, walkable retail area. The brick and antique-looking buildings feature a mix of small businesses and restaurants that are longtime favorites, plus some newer additions. Pantry Restaurant is a family-owned spot serving daily brunch favorites for over 43 years, while 3 Birds Coffee is a newer shop with traditional drinks and light breakfast. Rocco’s Riverside Deli is a neighborhood sandwich shop with various hot and cold helpings. Penny candies, fudge and flavored popcorn line the nostalgic walls of Taffy’s, a candy shop operating since 1946. Safeway and King Soopers are 2 miles away for groceries.

Larger Victorians and early 20th century bungalows
Mesa Junction is one of the more architecturally diverse neighborhoods in Pueblo. Buyers will notice that homes built after 1960 are rare. “Most homes, I would say, were built in the late 1800s to 1960s,” Mayo says. “Back then, all the big leagues would move into those Victorian mansions and some of them are amazing.” Because of the trolley system, streets are wider here than other neighborhoods. Front walkways leading to sidewalks are common; however, private driveways are considered a luxury. The neighborhood’s center includes Victorians and bungalows, which range from $200,000 to $800,000. The neighborhood outskirts include ranch-style homes, multi-families and duplexes. These homes range from $150,000 to $375,000.

Multiple pocket parks and nearby to Pueblo Riverwalk
Along Abriendo Avenue is a collection of pocket parks spanning less than 3 acres. Delevan Park, Jackson Park and Grome Park are on the west side, while Henkle Park is on the east. These parks have similar amenities, including playgrounds, green space and basketball courts. The parks are less than a mile away from most homes on the east and west sides. Residents in the neighborhood’s south side may explore Bruner Park, where there’s another playground and basketball court. Less than a mile drive or a quick bike ride away is the Pueblo Riverwalk, which is undergoing a $16 million expansion. “People can walk, jog and bring their dogs. They offer the riverboats with tours of the whole river,” Mayo says. “It’s highly utilized by residents, and its popularity is the reason why they’re expanding it.” The revamped riverwalk will have a new boathouse with a visitor center and rooftop. Hikers and bikers may travel along the Pueblo River Trail, which can connect to the 30 miles of trails around Pueblo.

Nationally recognized Rawlings Library and historic structures
The Rawlings Library is the main branch of the Pueblo County Library System, but its modern exterior holds much more than just books. The four-story building includes an interactive museum, a coffee shop, meeting rooms and new technology like vending laptops. The extensive amenities earned Rawlings the Library Journal’s Star Library Award in 2020. While walking the streets of Mesa Junction, residents will spot the historic Orman Mansion and Abriendo Inn. The Orman Mansion is a Richardson Romanesque home that housed former Colorado governor James B. Orman and Alva B. Adams from 1890 to 1941. The Abriendo Inn is a Foursquare home built for the founder of Walter Brewing Company, Martin Walter, in 1906. Both structures were converted to luxurious bed and breakfasts and event spaces. People are usually impressed by their interiors, which embody Victorian-style design with spiral staircases and decorative wallpaper.
