Tight community 3 miles from downtown Pueblo

Located 3 miles from downtown Pueblo, Salt Creek is an unincorporated community with a population of less than 800. Its current phase began in the 1940s, when Mount Carmel Credit Union founder Rev. Charles J. Murray subsidized and sold his land to members of the community. The neighborhood endured hardships from the 1950s to the 1980s, and people fought for basic utilities like electricity, gas, water and paved roads. By the end of the century, it became a part suburban, part industrial community of generational families and local businesses. Roughly 82% of the neighborhood’s population is Hispanic or Latino. “When you move to Salt Creek, it’s 100% for family; you’re looking to stay close to your family,” says Barb Ferrero, broker/associate at RE/MAX of Pueblo and city native. “Salt Creek is out towards Blende and St. Charles Mesa, where there are a lot of farmers.”

Ranch style homes with decorative fencing

The atmosphere in Salt Creek varies. In some parts, it feels like a suburb, where homes include driveways and larger lots. On the other hand, industrial elements like commercial trade businesses and junk yards also exist. Roads are irregular; some are narrow, with room for one car, while others are traditional, with double yellow lines. Sidewalks are also just as irregular; some areas have neatly paved pathways while other areas have nonexistent pathways or ones with little room for walking. The one uniting factor across the neighborhood is its residential architecture. Houses are mostly ranch-style builds from the 1920s to midcentury. Some homes feature dirt driveways leading to garages, while others include colorful adobe brick sidings with matching fences. Prices can vary from $40,000 to $330,000. “The homes are totally eclectic, but they can be very small,” Ferrero says.

Decades old indoor recreation facilities

While outdoor recreation is limited in Salt Creek, locals have plenty of indoor recreation options nearby. The St. Charles Mesa Recreation Center offers daily open gym time for pickleball, basketball and soccer, and fitness classes like chair yoga. The Fulton Heights Community Center is centrally located in the neighborhood and has existed since 1943. Folks can utilize the center’s fitness equipment and gymnasium on weekdays, and on weekends, they can use it for events and ceremonies. Nearby outdoor recreation can be found 2 miles away at the Arkansas River Park Trail, where hikers and bikers can do a challenging course. The Pueblo Riverwalk is 3 miles away; some locals describe the Riverwalk as the miniature version of San Antonio’s. Here, people explore various shops and restaurants as they walk along the river. Folks can also take boat rides around Lake Elizabeth or take personal pedal boats and paddleboards. “It’s easy to get around Pueblo; it’s all connected here,” Ferrero says. “You get on Highway 50, and you take a little right turn, and you’re on the Riverwalk.”

Students can attend Pueblo City Schools

Students can enroll in Pueblo City Schools, starting at Columbian Elementary. Afterward, they can attend Risley International Academy of Innovation for sixth through eighth grades. Both schools receive C-minus grades from Niche. Grade school finishes at Central High School, which earns a C grade.

Green chiles spotlighted at Pueblo Chile and Frijoles Festival

The Pueblo Chile and Frijoles Festival is held every September. It’s a celebration of the city’s agricultural traditions. Thousands attend the weekend event to see dozens of vendors sell their fresh produce. the event also includes live entertainment, cooking competitions and parades.

Business Highway 50 for most transportation

Salt Creek has little public transportation. There are a couple of Pueblo Transit bus stops, but people mostly drive. Downtown Pueblo is a 3-mile drive west using Business Highway 50. Drivers heading east on Business Highway 50 can reach Blende and Avondale in less than 15 miles.

Local restaurants spread along Business Highway 50

Restaurants sit along Business Highway 50, including Mane Brew Coffee, which has grown a following since it opened in 2020. The café pours freshly brewed coffee and serves pastries. Romero’s Café and Catering has been a longtime favorite, offering Tex-Mex cuisine for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Alberto’s Tacos serves Mexican food like tostadas and burritos. Mesa LaGree’s is available for groceries 3 miles east. Fresh produce, jams and green chiles are also available 4 miles away at the Milberger Farm.
