Pueblo West was just 49 square miles of desert until 1969 when developer Robert McCulloch and his company established the community as a residential area. McCulloch built Pueblo West from the ground up to accommodate 60,000 people; today, the city is halfway to his goal of being a quiet suburb for retirees. With a population of 33,000, the area is mainly a bedroom community with standard amenities and easy access to recreation. The city maintains its desert land roots with minimal trees, sand and sunshine.
Pueblo West is equestrian friendly, and it is quite common to share the road with horseback riders.

Adobe ranch homes at higher prices than Pueblo
The median home price in Pueblo West is $425,000, $126,000 more than the Pueblo median price. However, the Pueblo West median price is lower than Colorado Springs' by around $70,000. The area mainly has single-family homes with Adobe brick siding, which helps protect against the dry Southern Colorado climate. “They have a ton of construction in Pueblo West with one-acre lots. You can see the mountains, says Katie Ely, realtor at The Cutting Edge, Realtors. “They’re a little more cookie cutter, but they’re expanding out there.” Since Pueblo West was incorporated in 1969, most homes are from the 21st century.

North of popular Lake Pueblo State Park
Pueblo West has only four parks; however, residents are close to tons of outdoor amenities. Just south of the city is Lake Pueblo State Park, a popular destination that draws visitors from across Colorado. “Everybody goes to the reservoir; people can swim, boat and jet ski,” Ely says. “There aren’t a lot of lakes and rivers in Colorado. Some people have to go a few hours to other areas, so having that recreational water with the reservoir is a huge draw.” Lovell Park is the largest city park at 21 acres; it has a swimming pool, fields and a dog park. The Civic Center Park is one of the city’s newest additions and hosts events like the summer concert series and Oktoberfest. Pueblo West manages over 40 miles of paved and unpaved multipurpose trails, and is scheduled to add more parks and trails to accommodate potential population growth, according to the city’s 2024 parks and recreation plan. Golfers can play 18 holes at the Desert Hawk Golf Course, and shooting ranges like Range 145 and the Pueblo West Sportsman’s Club are towards the north end of the city.

Restaurants scattered around McCulloch Boulevard
Pueblo West has a handful of restaurants, but no designated downtown area. “All the major services you need, you’re going to come back to Pueblo,” Ely says. Along McCulloch Boulevard are bars, bakeries and restaurants serving Mexican and American cuisine. Nearby shopping options include Walmart Supercenter; other major options are in Pueblo, either off Highway 50 or downtown. Locally-owned restaurants and some national chains are scattered throughout the region; it’s also easy to find the Slopper, a famous Pueblo dish. “It’s a city-know specialty. It’s an open-faced cheeseburger smothered in green chiles. Pueblo Green Chile comes from the area,” Ely says.
