John Denver might have been pining for rural West Virginia when he sang “take me home, country roads,” but the lyrics could easily apply to Purcell, Oklahoma, too. Realtor Ronnie Maynard, with C.B. Heart of Oklahoma, describes Purcell as a “small bedroom community, where most people commute 30 or 40 miles into Oklahoma City or Norman for work every day.” He notes that the distance between home and office is a large part of its appeal to homebuyers and that the small-town, “country lifestyle feel” draws even those from out of state. “Lately, we’ve seen an influx of retirees moving here from California and New York. Purcell is really attracting folks who are trying to escape the rat race. It’s great for anyone looking for a quieter, more relaxed style of life.”

You’ll find a wide variety of homes here, from Traditional-style 2000s-era homes and midcentury ranches to early 20th-century Craftsman-style bungalows. Maynard notes that prices range almost as widely as architectural styles, starting at around $100,000 and climbing to nearly $700,000. “The market is really good, but there’s not much for sale right now,” he observes, noting that “what little there is for sale goes under contract quickly.” He adds that between January and August 2023, “less than 15 houses went up for sale, but they all had offers in under two weeks.”

You can expect to pay around $660,000 for a four-bedroom, four-bathroom Traditional-style home built in the early 2000s, with an attached two-car garage overlooking a spacious quarter-acre lot. Classic 1960s ranch-style homes with four bedrooms, two bathrooms and original hardwood flooring throughout tend to sell for between $300,000 and $400,000. “The market is excellent for the seller because prices are still way up there at the moment,” says Maynard, adding that he expects home values in Purcell to continue increasing. “There are several new subdivisions going in, some even on small acreages of one to two acres. The whole area is growing and building like crazy, it’s a great thing to see for a small town like this.”

35 miles south of downtown Oklahoma City, Purcell residents don’t need to venture far to enjoy the great outdoors. Purcell Lake, in the town’s southwestern corner, offers a myriad of opportunities for outdoor recreation. Golf enthusiasts have enjoyed the 18-hole, 71-par Brent Bruehl Memorial Golf Course since 1922, but the expansive park also features campgrounds, picnic areas, the town recreation center and pool, multi-use trails and a classic playground. Residents from across town flock to the lake every summer for the annual Purcell Carp Classic Fishing Tournament, a popular local event since 2018.

For their weekly produce, many residents visit the Purcell Farmer’s Market at the Santa Fe Plaza Caboose on Main Street on summer Saturday mornings. The market showcases everything from locally grown fruits and vegetables to locally made arts and crafts. During the off-season, residents can head to the Walmart Supercenter at the south end of town off Green Avenue for their groceries.

Students here attend schools in the highly rated Purcell Public Schools system. Most go to Purcell Elementary, Purcell Intermediate, Purcell Middle and Purcell High School, all of which boast grades of B or higher from Niche. “Purcell football is a big deal in the fall,” says Maynard, noting that “even folks whose kids graduated years ago go to the games, they’re such fun.”

With its quiet, pastoral atmosphere, you’ll want to take country roads home to Purcell, too.
