East Flushing offers single-family living in New York City

As you move from Flushing-Willets Point to East Flushing, the atmosphere shifts to an almost-suburban vibe. Subway stations disappear, single-family homes fill entire blocks and cars sit in driveways and garages. Still, East Flushing’s compact layout means locals can walk to restaurants on 162nd Street or supermarkets on Kissena Boulevard. This Queens neighborhood offers single-family homes for those who don’t want to give up the conveniences of the city.

A look at homes and prices in East Flushing

East Flushing’s street grid is largely made up of small single-family homes and duplexes. Some houses date back more than 100 years, and a stroll down a sidewalk reveals decades of architectural styles, including American Foursquare, bungalow and Dutch Colonial. Patches of grass serve as front yards, and homes often come with driveways. Prices start in the lower $800,000s and climb to $1.5 million. Some multifamily homes have sold for even more. High interest from transplants and investors has driven up home prices, says Wayne Rose, a Flushing-based associate broker at Century Homes Realty Group. "When a two-family house is going for $2 million or more, these numbers are shocking if you've been in the business for 30 years." Condo and apartment communities cluster on the north and west sides, closer to the train stations at Flushing-Main Street, Murray Hill and Broadway. Most recent condo sales range from the upper $400,000s to the upper $600,000s.

Long Island Rail Road, buses provide public transit

There aren’t any subway stops, but the Long Island Rail Road’s Murray Hill station is a couple of blocks outside the neighborhood. Riders can take it to Penn Station in Manhattan in 30 minutes or less. Trains don’t travel to LaGuardia Airport, less than 5 miles from East Flushing, but you can hop off the train at the Flushing-Main Street station and take a city bus to the airport. Buses also stop along 162nd Street, Parsons Boulevard and Sanford Avenue in East Flushing. Of course, driving is also an option. Interstate 495 runs south of the neighborhood, and the 12-mile trip can take 30 minutes to an hour and a half.

Coffee, sushi and Vietnamese food on 162nd Street

This is one of the most heavily residential parts of Flushing, but there are still pockets of stores and restaurants. You’ll find businesses all along 162nd Street, but they become more plentiful closer to Murray Hill-Broadway. A few examples of the street’s varied culinary scene include:

  • Beans & Malt, a cafe with long tables and couches that welcome remote workers
  • Chef Papa Vietnamese Kitchen, a casual eatery with coffee, pho and bánh mì sandwiches
  • La Nueva Amistad, a restaurant and bakery with Colombian dishes
  • Nawabari, a restaurant and bar with Korean and Japanese menus
There’s another commercial district on Kissena Boulevard. Mugi Bakery Cafe opens early to serve tea and coffee, while Zabiha Burger & Fries keeps its kitchen open well past midnight. You can take care of grocery shopping at Food Plus Supermarket or Gold City Supermarket.

Cluster of parks extends from Kissena Park to Queens Botanical Garden

East Flushing has some of the best park access of any neighborhood in Queens. A band of green spaces runs through Queensboro Hill and Flushing-Willets Point, both next to East Flushing. Head to these parks for activities such as:

  • Cycling around the 400-meter track at the Kissena Velodrome
  • Playing rounds of 18 holes at the public Kissena Golf Course
  • Organizing cricket and handball games at Kissena Corridor Park
  • Enjoying the sights and scents of flowers and herbs at Queens Botanical Garden
It’s about 3 miles to Citi Field, home of Major League Baseball’s New York Mets. When the Mets play at home, the subway's No. 7 and the Long Island Rail Road provide service to the Mets-Willets Point station near the ballpark. In 2027, professional soccer team New York City FC plans to begin playing at Etihad Park, next to Citi Field.

New after-school programs for P.S. 107 Thomas A. Dooley

Children in kindergarten through fifth grade can stay in the neighborhood to take classes at P.S. 107 Thomas A. Dooley. Starting in fall 2026, the highly rated elementary school will have after-school programs focused on academic study, test preparation and leadership skills.
