High-rises, new and old, are typical

Flushing is home to both pre- and post-war high-rise apartment buildings. Landmark-worthy Beaux-Arts buildings stand next to Georgian and Greek revival condos, which offer one-bedroom units for $500,000.

In recent years, new neighbors have joined these historic buildings. Modern glass and steel high-rises have increased the housing options in Flushing. One example is Flushing Commons, a 1.8 million-square-foot mixed-use complex near the Main Street 7 Line Station. This building offers luxury condominiums that range in price from $750,000 studios to $3 million condos with two bedrooms and two bathrooms.

According to Riva Zheng, a licensed real estate agent with Tru International Realty Corp, East West Plaza, a seven-story residential building on College Point Boulevard, is the newest project to be completed. Modern one-bedroom condos are available here for just over $600,000.

Food is a big draw to the neighborhood

"People travel here for the food," says Chatter Singh, a licensed real estate agent with Keller Williams Liberty and a longtime Queens resident. “You have Asian grocery stores selling sushi, dumplings and everything else you could want."

Nan Xiang Xiao Long Bao is famous citywide for its Shanghai dumplings, served to-go or inside the restaurant’s wood-paneled seating area. Deng Ji Yunnan Guoqiao Mixian has the city's largest selection of Chinese rice noodle soups, served a la carte in small porcelain bowls, and Followsoshi’s jian bing (a crepe-like street food) is a local favorite.

Locals can grocery shop at several Asian grocers within the neighborhood, including Jmart, H Mart Roosevelt and SkyFoods Supermarket. They can also shop at the nearby Stop & Shop, ShopRite and Food Plus Supermarket, all within walking distance of Flushing’s residential buildings. Produce sellers on Union Street offer both local and international produce, including lychees and persimmons.

Parks, museums and libraries

Flushing has several registered NYC landmarks, including the famous Unisphere, a 12-story-high globe from the 1964 World’s Fair that sits in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park. Nearby, the Queens Museum of Art and the Queens Zoo are excellent places to explore. Aside from a couple of pocket parks, Flushing Meadows Corona Park is the main green space in this vicinity, and residents make full use of it on warm days, picnicking and strolling the paved walking paths.

The Queens Library serves as an indoor gathering place for the neighborhood. This award-winning 75,000-square-foot glass tower was built in 1998 and is filled with natural light and public art.
