Quincy's legacy is intimately tied to Coca-Cola

Leading up to the Great Depression, a banker in Quincy named Mark Welch “Mr. Pat” Munroe wanted to share his Coca-Cola with the rest of the city. Noticing that people would spend their last nickel on a Coke, Munroe urged residents to buy its stock and hold onto it. He even loaned some of them money to do so. Quincy survived the Great Depression -- and every recession since – because of America’s favorite soft drink and Munroe’s foresight. “Quincy is known as being one of the richest towns per capita in the world for Coca-Cola stock ownership,” says Gay Steffens, a Realtor with Century 21 First Story Real Estate and longtime resident of Quincy. “And there are still a lot of Coca-Cola stockholders here.” The city’s bottling plant is long gone, but a large mural on the side of Padgett’s Jeweler’s is a reminder of Coca-Cola’s legacy.

Classical architecture and rural properties at varied price points

Located about 20 miles northwest of Tallahassee, the small city is known for its historic architecture. Concentrated downtown are several Neoclassical and Victorian-style homes. Away from downtown in the more rural areas of the city, you will find tiny remodeled frame houses listing for as low as $60,000, custom homes in a gated community and large acreage homes listing for close to $1 million. “If you’re looking for a decently priced home close to Tallahassee, this would be the place,” says Steffens. “We have a lot of historic homes, and also homes that aren’t necessarily historic but have a historic feel.” A Colonial Revival-style home on 5 acres built in 1990 lists for $950,000. “That home would be worth several million dollars in Tallahassee,” says Steffens.

Historic museum and Quincy Music Theater anchor downtown district

Despite a population of just 8,000, Quincy offers its residents multiple cultural attractions in its historic downtown district. Amid the storefronts designed in the decorative Italianate style, the Gadsden Arts Center & Museum is housed in the renovated 1912 Bell & Bates hardware store. It features rotating regional and national art exhibitions and a permanent collection of vernacular art, or art made by those with no formal training. The Quincy Music Theater is a popular performing arts venue that stands out for its modern look. Downtown restaurants include Big Papa’s Chophouse, which features upscale comfort food. More dining and retail options can be found along the West Jefferson Street corridor, which runs through downtown and the length of the city.
