Quogue is one of the quietest sections of the Hamptons
The village of Quogue offers beach access and upscale living in the Hamptons, without the loud summertime buzz that can overtake some parts of the South Shore. “It’s probably one of the quieter spots you can have in the Hamptons,” says Steven Rosmarin, a Realtor with Douglas Elliman who lives and sells in Quogue. “It’s a very low-key community with a very small main street. People who live there appreciate that quiet.” Historically, Quogue’s quiet character made it a popular seasonal escape for celebrities. New homes are now being built as the community of 1,700 continues to grow in population and popularity, while still maintaining an air of tranquility. “It almost feels like you’re in a private community,” Rosmarin says.

This Gilded Age resort town continues to expand its housing stock
Founded in 1659, Quogue was a small fishing and farming village until the arrival of the railroad transformed it into a resort town in the 1880s. Many homes in the Quogue Historic District trace their construction to this later era. “A lot of families have lived there for generations and generations, but there’s a little mix of people who’ve come in,” Rosmarin says. “Probably 90-plus percent of the population are seasonal owners.” Homebuilding has never stopped: The most recently built homes were completed in 2024. Properties below 3,000 square feet can sell for $1,400,000 to $5,100,000, while larger homes have sold for $1,700,000 to $12,300,000. The most expensive residences tend to sit along Shinnecock Bay, Quantuck Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. “We probably have the highest concentration of homes with tennis courts that you’ll find anywhere in the country,” Rosmarin says. “Probably a good 25% of homes, if not more, have tennis courts, especially north of Montauk Highway.” Due to the smaller tax base, taxes are also lower in Quogue than in neighboring communities.

Oceanfront beaches and inland parks offer outdoor recreation
The Quogue Village Beach on Westhampton Island is open to the public and staffed by lifeguards from late June to Labor Day. “We’re very connected to our beach on Dune Road,” Rosmarin says. “People who live on the mainland can walk across the bridge, which is around 100 feet wide, and then you’re at the beach.” The Quogue Beach Club and the Quogue Surf Club have been fixtures of local summer recreation for around 100 years, hosting swim competitions and social events for members. Likewise, the Quogue Field Club has brought families together for tennis matches since 1901.
The Quogo Neck Lane Park and Marina has a boat lunch for exploring Quantuck Bay and the South Shore’s back bays. On the north side of town, the Quogue Wildlife Refuge is a popular place to admire local flora and fauna. “We’re pretty proud of our wildlife refuge. They rescue wild animals — birds, mostly — and rehabilitate them on-site,” Rosmarin says. “There are a number of walking trails that people are on every day, and they go around a beautiful pond where people used to cut and store ice 100 years ago. They’ve added on a whole new southern section that has a beautiful wooden walkway up to Quantuck Bay.”

The Quogue Country Market serves as the local retail outlet
Retail options are limited in this primarily residential community, but the Quogue Country Market has served as the local gourmet grocer since 1917. Additional supermarket options can be found in neighboring Westhampton Beach, home to a Lidl and a Fruit King. “It’s only 6 minutes to get to the main street of Westhampton Beach, where all the restaurants and shopping are,” Rosmarin says.

A-rated education at Westhampton Beach schools
Students can attend Quogue Elementary School, Westhampton Middle School and Westhampton Beach Senior High School, each of which receive an A rating from Niche. “Quogue Elementary serves a very small group of kids, plus people who pay tuition to go here,” Rosmarin says. “Students get a unique school experience that includes picnics on the beach.”
