A city community with a sandy beach

Racine’s 12th Ward is a rarity: a city neighborhood with a beach. Part of an area that Racine residents know as North Downtown, the 12th Ward’s proximity to Downtown Racine makes its vibe feel more like a city than a beach. “The homes are nice and well-kept,” says Lyle Albro, sales director at Shorewest Realtors. “The zoo and the beach are popular attractions, and it’s not far from downtown.”

Typical architectural styles in The 12th Ward include bungalows and colonial and ranch-style homes. Homes were built mainly from the 1890s through the 1920s, but a few homes were built in the 1950s. Home prices range from $110,000 to $260,000, with a median price of $225,000, up 29% from the previous year. “The closer you get to the lake, the more expensive homes are,” Albro says. “But outside of that, there are still some nice homes.”

Shopping district along Douglas Avenue

“There is somewhat of a shopping district along Douglas Avenue, which runs along the western border of the area,” Albro says. “There are some restaurants there, but the neighborhood is mostly residential.” Local bars include Hansen’s Tap on Goold Street and Neighborhood Bar on Erie Street. Gypsy Java, the local coffee shop, is located on North Main Street, and Rooster’s Restaurant sits just west of the neighborhood on Yout Street. The closest grocery store is ALDI on Douglas Avenue, or residents can head north to Piggly Wiggly on Erie Street.
