Country living beyond Birmingham

Crisscrossed by gentle creeks and rolling hills, the town of Ragland offers classic country living in the rural reaches outside the Greater Birmingham area in St. Clair County. Early settlers caught so much trout that they named the area Trout Creek before it was renamed Ragland after an area landowner and coal mine operator. The Ragland coal mines supplied furnaces and refineries all over the state, expanding to other states once the railroad came through in the late 19th century. After mines shut down, the National Cement Company and Ragland Brick Company were established and capitalized on limestone shale and clay deposits. They built manufacturing centers that sit just south of Ragland's town center. Brick and cement manufacturing remains an essential part of Ragland's economy.

Farmhouses and ranchers in town or by the Coosa River

Ragland residents live in the town or on deep home lots bordered by dense tree lines and farmland, where housing costs range from $100,000 for a modest ranch-style home on a half-acre plot to $700,000 for a grand farmhouse on 18 acres. The area also features waterfront properties on the Coosa River waterfront, where locals can cast their fishing lines or enjoy the sunrise on the water. Hillside homes and deep country residences offer more secluded and private environs surrounded by views of the distant mountains.
