Glenwood-Brooklyn is a historical neighborhood near downtown Raleigh
Glenwood–Brooklyn is a historical neighborhood that sits near Glenwood Avenue and the small, industrial and rail corridor north of downtown. The community was initially built in the early 1900s as a streetcar suburb, and these days the neighborhood is known for its well-maintained, century-old homes and its prime location. “The proximity to Five Points, Hayes Barton, Glenwood and Wade Avenue makes it one of the most convenient locations in Raleigh,” says Realtor Marshall Rich of the Rich Realty Group. “On top of that, it’s very walkable and the streets are lined with oaks and attractive, historic homes.”
Many homes are part of the Glenwood-Brooklyn historic district
Developers laid out most lots and streets from about 1905 through the 1930s. These houses, just north of downtown, form the Glenwood–Brooklyn Historic District, which encompasses the southern and eastern portions of the neighborhood. In contrast, the streets north of Fred Fletcher Park are lined with condo complexes built in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. “It’s a charming neighborhood mostly made up of Craftsman-style bungalows mixed with some Queen Anne and Victorian-style homes,” says Rich. “There has been a bit of new construction lately. The Cottages at Filmore was Raleigh’s first ‘cottage court,’ development in 2020.” Because the neighborhood sits within walking distance of downtown, housing prices have risen dramatically in recent decades. Single-family homes typically sell for between $840,000 and $1.5 million, while most condos and townhouses range from $300,000 to $580,000.
Locals are within walking distance of vibrant South Glenwood
Retail in the area begins where the historic district ends: along Peace Street, at the southern end of the neighborhood. It’s home to the local Publix, as well as a few restaurants. More importantly, Peace Street marks the beginning of Glenwood South, which has become one of the premier shopping, dining and nightlife spots in Raleigh. Most Glenwood-Brooklyn residents are within an easy walk of the area’s many highly rated bars and restaurants, including fashionable spots like Madre and Vidrio. Glenwood South extends into downtown Raleigh, which offers additional shopping as well as most of the town’s top museums and entertainment venues.
Highly rated local public schools
Wiley Magnet Elementary School and Oberlin Magnet Middle School both serve the neighborhood and have A-minus grades on Niche. Broughton Magnet High School has an A-minus as well, and allows students to specialize in global studies via language immersion and International Baccalaureate programs.
Fletcher Park is the heart of the neighborhood
Fred Fletcher Park sits in the center of the neighborhood and serves as a popular community gathering place. The sizable park has athletic fields, walking trails, tennis courts and a small playground, as well as an amphitheater occasionally used for live events. Residents are also just a couple of miles from historic Pullen Park, which was opened in 1887 and is the state's first public park, and the sprawling network of green spaces that covers south central Raleigh.
It's close to all of the events downtown
While Glenwood-Brooklyn is a fairly quiet place, locals can walk to any number of annual events held in downtown Raleigh and Glenwood South throughout the year. These range from the Raleigh Christmas Parade, which has been running for over 80 years, to the Hopscotch Music Festival and Brewgaloo, North Carolina’s largest craft beer festival.
It's easy to get to the city center and the northern suburbs
Glenwood-Brooklyn’s residents are within a mile or two of downtown, but they’re even closer to U.S. Route 401, which passes east of the neighborhood and makes for easy commuting to north or south Raleigh. Several bus routes run along Glenwood Avenue, most of them connecting to north Raleigh or the central Raleigh Union Station Bus Facility. Union Station, located about a mile south of Glenwood-Brooklyn, also serves as the local Amtrak hub, offering connections to Greensboro, Charlotte and Richmond, Virginia. It’s a roughly 12-mile drive from the neighborhood to Raleigh-Durham International Airport.
