Southeast Raleigh communities with diverse recreation and housing options
Named after the body of water that runs through it, Walnut Creek encompasses numerous neighborhoods within Southeast Raleigh. In addition to contemplative nature walks and space to exercise and play, Walnut Creek offers diverse school options, recreation for adults and children, and comfortable homes with room to grow. For these features and its proximity to downtown, Walnut Creek is an attractive area for professionals and families to settle down in Raleigh. “It’s an older community,” says Troy Smith, director of the Worthdale Community Center in the neighborhood. “A lot of older people live here, but it’s been changing in the last three or four years due to new houses and apartments being developed.”
Softball and baseball are popular sports for Raleigh locals, making this complex a favorite.

Worthdale Park and Community Center
Worthdale Park has plenty of outdoor space and facilities in the neighborhood, such as a playground, tennis courts, ballfields and a community center. “At the community center, we have after school programs, summer camps, a boxing program, taekwondo and tennis. Shaw University uses our tennis courts for practice,” Smith says. “We’re super close to Walnut Creek Amphitheater. We have the Walnut Creek Trail adjacent to our center.” This trail spans over 15 miles, connecting the Neuse River Trail and Lake Johnson Park. From the community center, visitors can walk about a mile and a half on the trail to the amphitheater. Walnut Creek is also home to the Walnut Creek Wetland Park and the Norman and Betty Camp Education Center, where visitors can learn about the area’s protected wetlands and conservation efforts and watch for species like hummingbirds, blue herons, barred owls, turtles and more.

Ranches, new traditionals and townhouses throughout
Much of the Walnut Creek area was developed after World War II and through the 1960s. For this reason, many Walnut Creek subdivisions feature neat rows of cozy, ranch-style homes. A three-bedroom, renovated ranch typically costs anywhere from the mid-$300,00s to just over $400,000. Walnut Creek also features many cul-de-sacs with two-story, new traditional homes built between the 1990s and 2000s. These homes sit in a similar price range and often have features like prominent, two-car garages and recessed entryways. Walnut Creek also has a selection of townhouses built between the 2000s and today that range from $250,000 to $400,000. “You see up and coming families moving in,” Smith says, “but it’s not super affordable for the Southeast Raleigh area. The prices are definitely creeping up.”
