Despite new development, the area still feels quiet. "It's grown like crazy, but still has that country feel to it. And you only have to drive a little way from a main road," Hayes says.

Walnut Creek is about a 15-minute drive from downtown Raleigh, and Research Triangle Park, a major hub of employment in the region, is a 30-minute drive. "You have great access to major freeways. The [Interstate] 540 and as well the 440 gives you easy access to so many points," Hayes says. Walnut Creek is also home to the Wake Correctional Center and North Carolina Correctional Institute for Women, two of Raleigh's prisons.
How the area is growing and changing
Walnut Creek has a mix of longtime residents and newer families moving in. "A lot of older people live here, but it's been changing in the last three or four years due to new houses and apartments being developed," says Troy Smith, director of the Worthdale Community Center in the neighborhood.
Hayes notes that, thanks to this growth, new shopping and dining options are also being added. "They're still lacking a bit of the shopping and the kind of kitschy, quaint areas," Hayes says. "It's coming. If you invest now into a property in that area, you're going to see many more things coming your way."
