A small but tight-knit town south of York

First settled in 1852, Red Lion sprung up around the Maryland and Pennsylvania Railroad, or the “Ma and Pa Railroad” as it’s affectionately called. Though the railroad is now long gone, Red Lion has grown into a thriving little community. “It’s got a small-town feel,” says Susan Spahr, a Realtor with Century 21 Core Partners who has sold homes across York County. “Everything is close together, so people can walk from coffee shops to convenience stores to the library and the park.” With a unique local business scene and annual festivals, residents of Red Lion take pride in their town’s neighborly spirit.

From cafes to breweries on Main Street

Local shops and restaurants occupy brick storefronts along Main Street and Broadway, expressing the town’s quirky character with distinct wares from collectibles like comics and records to musical instruments and local art. Residents grab bites and pints at Sign of the Horse, a casual restaurant and brewery. It shares an outdoor patio with Phat Cat Coffee, a chic little café known for seasonal lattes, brunch pastries and fresh-roasted beans. For a classic diner breakfast, Red Lion Corner Café is the place to go. Located near Windsor Commons Shopping Center, it’s also convenient to grocers like Weis Markets and Giant.

Town roars to life with annual festivals

Though Red Lion might be a small town, it’s anything but sleepy. “Everyone comes out for the street fair every August, but there’s always activities going on,” Spahr says. Double Barrel Roadhouse is home to regular concerts and events, and the annual Suds and Songs festival at Vulcan Field brings the town together to enjoy local bands and breweries. The biggest event of the year, however, is the Red Lion Street Fair, which sees Main Street taken over by local vendors, bounce houses and food trucks.

A lion's share of historic homes

The long history of Red Lion can be seen in the character of its homes, with some dating back as far as the late 1800s. In the heart of town where buildings cluster densely together along historic Main Street, American Foursquare homes and townhouses are popular, with large front porches and bay windows. Further out, where the lots offer more room to spread out and slightly more recent constructions can be found, ranch-style and split-level homes tend to dominate the streets. Across town, residents will have rolling hills lined by narrow but neat sidewalks to walk along, with some homes featuring modest lawns and wooded backyards. A fixer-upper townhouse with three bedrooms in need of some TLC can sell for as low as $65,000, while a well-maintained four-bedroom single-family home built in the 1970s lists for $460,000. The median price is approximately $190,000, which is enough to get three bedrooms in a detached single-family home or semi-detached townhouse.

Walk along the Ma and Pa Greenway

Red Lion is uniquely walkable thanks to the Ma and Pa Greenway, a stretch of walking and biking paths winding through town along the old railroad corridors. A safer (and more scenic) alternative to the heavily trafficked main roads, this greenbelt connects pedestrians to shopping centers, restaurants and Fairmount Park. During summer, the park’s splash pad is a hub for kids to cool off after climbing and sliding on the playground. Afterward, there’s ample space for a picnic under the pavilion. For a day on the water, folks head to William Kain Park 15 minutes down the road, where they can take the boat for a spin or lounge on the shore of Lake Redman.

For further travel requiring a flight, Harrisburg International Airport is approximately 51 minutes or 35 miles to the north.
