Red Oaks Mill mixes suburban amenities and a rural atmosphere
Red Oaks Mill residents experience both Poughkeepsie's suburban amenities and LaGrange's spread-out, rural feel, as the community splits the two areas. “It’s quiet and private, yet relevant, because you’re close to everything,” says Justin LaFalce, an agent and the leader of the Hudson Valley team at Keller Williams Realty Partners. LaFalce says the area prides itself on its highly rated school systems and its location near Poughkeepsie’s Union Street Historic District and Marist University, which sits along the Hudson River.
Cape Cod, ranch-style and custom homes sit along wide, hilly roads
The area contains several neighborhoods and cul-de-sacs, which feature many housing types. Traditional homes, including ranch-style properties and Cape Cods, often range from $230,000 to $540,000. Custom homes can run from $580,000 to $715,000. The car-dependent community’s roads are usually wide, allowing for street parking and dog-walking, even though they can lack sidewalks. The region has hills and streets that wind through the area instead of sitting in a grid. A variety of trees, including pine trees, surround the streets. Yards typically contain numerous bushes and a smaller tree or two.
Two highly rated school districts serve the community
Most students are zoned for Wappingers Central School District, which holds an overall A-minus Niche grade. Kinry Road Elementary School earns a B-plus score, as does Wappingers Junior High School. Roy C. Ketcham High School, often called RCK, offers the Bard Early College program, where students travel to Bard College during school hours to take classes. Those classes include The College Experience, which is designed to help seniors understand the college application and financing processes, as well as the habits that make university students successful. The high school receives a B-plus rating.
Select students in the northwest and northeast sections of the community are served by the Arlington Central School District, which gets an overall B-plus grade. The nearby Poughkeepsie Day School, a private prekindergarten through 12th-grade academy, has an A-plus score. The community is less than 10 miles from Marist College, which has more than 6,500 students.
Youth sports fields, a fishing and boating lake and a nearby theater
Red Oaks Mill Park features youth baseball diamonds, basketball and tennis courts and a playground. MacGhee Park has an open football or soccer practice space and a playground. Just north, Greenvale Park offers soccer fields, a ball field and a pavilion. Around 5 miles south is Fisherman’s Park, along Wappinger Lake, where anglers can catch bass, pickerel, perch and crappie. The lake allows for small boats, and a public boat launch sits at the southern end of the water on Spring Street. Regal Galleria Mall, around 5 miles away, is a first-run movie theater.
Restaurants along Vassar Road and access to Poughkeepsie Galleria
Several restaurants and businesses straddle Vassar Road, as do houses of worship like Vassar Road Baptist Church. Poughkeepsie Steakhouse’s building is almost 200 years old. Thailicious is a family-owned business with authentic Thai food, and 3 Olives offers Mediterranean favorites. South of the area, Casa Vallarta serves traditional Mexican entrees. The community does not have a conventional grocery store, but Dimpy’s Food Mart is a few miles away, as is Stop & Shop. The Poughkeepsie Galleria mall, home to stores like Macy’s and Target, is less than a 5-mile drive.
The Arlington Holiday Festival brings the community together each year
The community is within a few miles of the Arlington Holiday Festival, held annually along the town’s Raymond Avenue and Main Street. The event blends an eggnog crawl with carriage rides, food vendors, live music and an appearance from Santa Claus.
An easy drive to Vassar Brothers Medical Center and a regional airport
New York State Route 376 runs into the community, as does County Road 77, known locally as Vassar Road. The area is close to 6 miles from Poughkeepsie’s Union Street Historic District and from Vassar Brothers Medical Center, which has more than 260 private patient rooms. Westchester County Airport is around 55 miles away. Dutchess County Public Transit G Route buses make stops along Vassar Road. LaFalce says the area often gets a few snowstorms each winter, but the surrounding towns quickly clear the roads, so inclement weather does not usually cause many disruptions.
