Country Heights
Neighborhood in Redding, California
Shasta County 96001
Contemporary, non-HOA homes from $350,000 to $850,000
Most Country Heights homes were built between the late 1980s and early 2000s by Signature Northwest, who adjusted floor plans to buyers’ tastes. It’s not a standard tract housing development, and there’s no HOA, which creates a somewhat custom feel. Single-levels built in the early 1990s ask between $350,000 and $505,000. Ranch-style stucco and custom stonework homes built in the 2000s range from $600,000 to $850,000. Many feature open floor plans, vaulted ceilings and covered concrete patios. Lawns are typically lush and cared for, and neighbors often take evening walks with dogs in the glow of the western sunset.Central Country Heights Park, two area golf courses
Kids bike over to the playground and grass fields at Country Heights Park in the heart of the neighborhood. The park is also outfitted with shaded picnic tables and a basketball court. Golfers can join Riverview Country Club less than 4 miles from the neighborhood’s entrance. Social memberships at Riverview include The Lounge, where locals get together for Sunday brunches, special events and casual dining overlooking the Sacramento River. Three miles south of Country Heights, Allen’s Golf Course is a public, family-friendly nine-hole set within the trees. Adventure seekers run, hike or bike the paved trail that parallels Buenaventura Boulevard on the north side of Country Heights. “You can hop right on a trail from Blazingwood Drive,” adds Mewhirter. “I’ve seen people park there and walk their dogs because Blazingwood is steep.” Just 4 miles north, South Diestelhorst Bridge Trailhead opens up the nearly 6-mile Sacramento River Trail loop.Shasta County’s first high school earns an A
Public school students start at Juniper School in the Redding Elementary District for kindergarten through eighth grade, given a B-minus on Niche. Older students advance to Shasta High within the Shasta Union High School District, both earning an A grade. Shasta is Shasta County’s first high school and has been recognized as a California Distinguished School.Downtown events and Freedom Festival at Redding Civic Auditorium
Downtown Redding offers an ongoing calendar of community events, from The Startup Games for entrepreneurs in November at Viva Downtown to Vine and Dine in May at Redding City Hall. On the Fourth of July, Country Heights residents can drive 4 miles north to Turtle Bay Exploration Park for the Fourth of July Firecracker 5K with a pancake breakfast. The park’s Redding Civic Auditorium hosts the Freedom Festival in the evening with live music, food trucks and fireworks.Quick drive to downtown, 9 miles from Redding Regional Airport
Breslauer Way leads out of the neighborhood over the railroad tracks to reach the brewery, industrial employers and the Sacramento Riverbank. The Redding Area Bus Authority, or RABA, has a bus route through the community on South Market Street; however, most residents drive their cars. It takes about 10 minutes to drive the 3.5 miles into Downtown Redding and under 20 minutes to drive the approximately 9 miles to the Redding Regional Airport.Fall River Brewing fun, Placer Heights Plaza convenience
Living within 3.5 miles of Downtown Redding, residents can quickly reach an assortment of dining and shopping choices. On the way toward downtown along South Market Street, barbecue lovers frequent Sweetie’s Café, and the small Dutch Brothers Coffee serves drive-through treats. Fall River Brewing Company is about a mile from the neighborhood entrance. “It’s their main warehouse where they brew their beer, just on the other side of the railroad tracks,” says Mewhirter. “They have several different food trucks that rotate there and indoor games like cornhole and live music.”For groceries, locals can choose from Holiday Market in the Placer Heights Plaza 3 miles northwest or Trader Joe’s at Mt. Shasta Mall, about 5 miles from the neighborhood’s eastern edge. “Right by Holiday Market,” adds Mewhirter, “Burrito Bandito’s is a locally-owned place that’s really popular. It’s like a Subway for Mexican food, where they custom-build your bowl or burrito super-fast.” Le Testimony Organic Bistro also shares the plaza, specializing in savory and sweet crepes.
