Mountain-view suburban living, close to golfing and downtown Redding
Reaching west from Route 273 into elevated terrain with ridges and canyons, Country Heights is known locally as one of Redding’s largest and most desirable communities. Peaceful streetscapes lined with sidewalks offer mountain and forest views, and finger cul-de-sacs spread out from its two main corridors, Howard and Riviera drives. “Unlike downtown Redding where you also have homes from the early 1900s,” says Tanya Mewhirter, Redding native and broker with the Shasta Realty Group since 2011, “in Country Heights, you’ll find contemporary-style houses built in the 2000s. Some of the newest homes are deeper west, all the way at the end of Sunglow Drive.” And while it’s all suburban residential, with one central Country Heights Park, there are plenty of eateries and several golf courses within 3 or 4 miles of the neighborhood’s core.
Contemporary, non-HOA homes from $350,000 to $850,000
Most Country Heights homes were built between the late 1980s and early 2000s by Signature Northwest, who adjusted floor plans to buyers’ tastes. It’s not a standard tract housing development, and there’s no HOA, which creates a somewhat custom feel. Single-levels built in the early 1990s ask between $350,000 and $505,000. Ranch-style stucco and custom stonework homes built in the 2000s range from $600,000 to $850,000. Many feature open floor plans, vaulted ceilings and covered concrete patios. Lawns are typically lush and cared for, and neighbors often take evening walks with dogs in the glow of the western sunset.

Central Country Heights Park, two area golf courses
Kids bike over to the playground and grass fields at Country Heights Park in the heart of the neighborhood. The park is also outfitted with shaded picnic tables and a basketball court. Golfers can join Riverview Country Club less than 4 miles from the neighborhood’s entrance. Social memberships at Riverview include The Lounge, where locals get together for Sunday brunches, special events and casual dining overlooking the Sacramento River. Three miles south of Country Heights, Allen’s Golf Course is a public, family-friendly nine-hole set within the trees. Adventure seekers run, hike or bike the paved trail that parallels Buenaventura Boulevard on the north side of Country Heights. “You can hop right on a trail from Blazingwood Drive,” adds Mewhirter. “I’ve seen people park there and walk their dogs because Blazingwood is steep.” Just 4 miles north, South Diestelhorst Bridge Trailhead opens up the nearly 6-mile Sacramento River Trail loop.

On the way toward downtown along South Market Street, barbecue lovers frequent Sweetie’s Café, and the small Dutch Brothers Coffee serves drive-through treats. Fall River Brewing Company is about a mile from the neighborhood entrance. “It’s their main warehouse where they brew their beer, just on the other side of the railroad tracks,” says Mewhirter. “They have several different food trucks that rotate there and indoor games like cornhole and live music.”
For groceries, locals can choose from Holiday Market in the Placer Heights Plaza 3 miles northwest or Trader Joe’s at Mt. Shasta Mall, about 5 miles from the neighborhood’s eastern edge. “Right by Holiday Market,” adds Mewhirter, “Burrito Bandito’s is a locally-owned place that’s really popular. It’s like a Subway for Mexican food, where they custom-build your bowl or burrito super-fast.” Le Testimony Organic Bistro also shares the plaza, specializing in savory and sweet crepes.
