A-grade Shasta Union High School District, neighboring Shasta College
Public schools are within the Columbia Elementary School District, which is given an A-minus on Niche and the Shasta Union High School District, which earns an A. Kids start at Columbia School and move on to Mountain View Middle, both graded a B-plus. High schoolers head to Foothill High, which gets an A-minus and features a Career Center that offers job opportunities and helps with college presentations.Shasta College’s main campus occupies 337 acres and is less than 2 miles east of the neighborhood. "We're one of the top California Community Colleges to be recognized for our innovative programs," says Peter Griggs, marketing, communications, and public relations director for Shasta College. "Our downtown Health Sciences campus, about a 10-minute drive from here, offers programs in dental hygiene, physical therapy and nursing. At the main Redding campus, we have a full working farm with cows, goats, pigs, and greenhouses. Our industrial technology, forestry and heavy equipment programs are well respected by employers." Students looking to transfer can graduate with an Associate Degree for Transfer, which guarantees admittance into a California State University. Shasta College also boasts a Regional Public Safety Training Center, which Griggs says "is producing trained firefighters that are so essential to the North State." In 2024, Shasta College celebrates its 75th anniversary.

Holiday lights and Harvest Festival
There's always a holiday event going on not far from Hawley, including the spectacular Redding Garden of Lights from November through January at the McConnell Arboretum & Botanical Gardens on the Sacramento River, about a 10-minute, 4-mile drive southwest. On a smaller scale, Shasta College has been hosting its annual Harvest Fest since 2008 at Ross Ranch, about a mile north of the college, to support the campus farm. Student presentations, locally grown food, beer and wine, live music and a silent auction are all part of the festivities.Easy Highway 299 connection to I-5
Hawley runs along Collyer Avenue, which parallels with and connects to Highway 299. This means it only takes about 4 minutes to leave the neighborhood and get on Redding's main Interstate 5. While commuting everywhere by car is easy on Redding's typically uncongested roadways, there are several Redding Area Bus Authority stops along Collyer Drive for errands or reaching the Shasta College campus. The Redding Regional Airport is a 10-mile, 20-minute trip from central Hawley.

Dine at Hearth or The Grille, grocery shop at Raley's or Trader Joe's
A quick trip down 299 from southern Hawley, From the Hearth Kitchen and Pie Shop is a popular place to meet for coffee and pastries or to lunch on house-made paninis, breads and salads. There's a public Starbucks on the Shasta College campus, and The Grille at Gold Hills Golf Club is open year-round, weather permitting, for tacos, burgers and dogs. Locals can drive 3 miles west to grocery shop at Raley's in Northpoint or 4 miles south to Trader Joe's, right next to all the shopping and dining at Mt. Shasta Mall.

The First Street climate risk data foundation ranks Hawley an 8 out of 10 for severe heat factor. Outdoor exercise or biking to campus is often more enjoyable in cooler months outside of July and August. The neighborhood's CAP Index score for crime is a 2 overall — half the U.S. average.
