Rural valley living just south of Lake Shasta
In the heart of Shasta County, Jones Valley offers a quiet rural lifestyle near fishing, boating and camping. Just north of the neighborhood, marinas and houseboat rental sites dot the southeast stretch of Lake Shasta. This valley community sits at the base of Bear Mountain and the south end of the Shasta Cascades, offering panoramic nature views. Although the landscape is anchored by dry, exposed earth, a carpet of trees covers most of its central acreage. Roadways named Bear Mountain, Dry Creek, Elk Trail and Jones Valley Trail echo its countryside character. “Being near Lake Shasta is really the main feature of living in Jones Valley because you can launch your boat and fish,” says Louise Levy Nicholson, Office Clerk at Bella Vista Elementary. “It’s just a small, lower to middle-income area, and there’s really not much out there.” Narrow asphalt roads loop through the community, past long dirt driveways and semi-secluded properties. “Jones Valley is known for marinas and water sports, and it’s one of those communities where they’re living out there for work-life balance,” says Laurie Baker, General Manager of Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association. “It’s not a big commerce area, and the lifestyle isn’t about getting rich and getting ahead. Instead, it’s about — these are my interests and I just need to make a living so I can enjoy my outdoors.”
Shasta-Trinity National Forest and Lake Shasta
Surrounded by mountains, trails and lake launches, recreation spaces constitute the bulk of Jones Valley. The section of Shasta-Trinity National Forest that spreads across Lower Jones Valley, just north of the Jones Valley community, is a nature-lovers paradise. Lower Jones Valley campground sits on the Pit River Arm of Lake Shasta for staycations, and there are hundreds of miles of Lake Shasta shoreline to explore. “It depends on what watercraft you own, but you can always rent houseboats, motorboats and Jet Skis on the lake,” says Baker. “Or you can take your own in and out whenever you want.” While out on Lake Shasta, anglers pull in salmon, bass and trout. At Jones Valley Resort on the lakefront adventure seekers can join a whitewater rafting trip. “It’s really nice how you have pine trees all the way to the water’s edge, and yet it’s always swimmable and not cold,” Baker adds. “And depending on where you are in those trees, you can see both Mt. Lassen and Mt. Shasta.”

Holiday Market convenience, option in nearby Bella Vista and Palo Cedro
In the neighborhood, there’s a small Hidden Valley in a barn-like structure that stocks convenience foods. “There’s also a small My-T-Fine grocery market in Bella Vista, where there’s a Dollar General and the Bella Vista Grill, but you won’t find any big fancy stuff,” says Baker. “It’s not like there’s nothing in Jones Valley; it’s just more small-town conveniences that are close by. You can get to whatever you need in Bella Vista or Palo Cedro in 10 minutes.” Holiday Market is the grocery go-to in the Palo Cedro Shopping Center 10 miles south, and family-owned Norm’s restaurant is known for half-pound Angus burgers and plate-size pastries. West of Interstate 5 in the downtown area of Shasta Lake City, around 8 miles from the western Jones Valley, there’s a Farmers Market Place for groceries and Old Mill Eatery and Smokehouse that serves homestyle meals in a rustic cabin ambiance.

I think because it’s peaceful, and there aren’t a lot of city distractions, it’s easier to study,” says Baker. “We also have open enrollment, so interdistrict transfers are really easy. It doesn’t matter where you live in the county; you can apply to any school.”

High heat means high fire risk
Hilly, rugged terrain rich in vegetation, combined with north winds, makes the area susceptible to wildfires. The Jones Fire in 1999, Bear Fire in 2004, and Mountain Fire in 2019 caused significant damage and destroyed several hundred homes.
