One of Redwood City’s 17 main neighborhoods, Staumbaugh Heller is a popular pick for anyone who wants to be near the downtown bustle while enjoying a laidback residential atmosphere. It’s a walker’s paradise, as you can simply stroll to the newest bar or down to the train station for city exploration. Minutes from the bay, Staumbaugh Heller is located 27 miles southeast of downtown San Francisco.
Slightly removed from the bustle of downtown Redwood City, Staumbaugh Heller’s urban-residential vibe means a step down from the whirlwind of busier areas. Houses are in close quarters with each other, each one unique as residents tend to their garden spaces and exterior decoration. Sidewalks are full of people out walking their dogs or going for a jog, music coming from open windows. Most properties in the area are condos and townhouses, often adhering to modern styles. However, single-family homes usually come in the form of the ever-popular bungalow and Spanish Revivals with their iconic, red-tiled roofs. Due to the density of multi-family buildings, there are more renters than owners in Staumbaugh Heller. The median selling price for three-bedroom single-family homes is just under $1 million, while townhouses spike up to $1.2 million, most likely due to their contemporary builds.
Public institutions of Staumbaugh Heller are served by the Redwood City School District and Sequoia Union High School District, which together cover kindergarten through 12th grade. There are several elementary schools for children to attend, and a common pipeline has them starting at Henry Ford Elementary. Ranked with an overall B on Niche but an A-minus for staff, Henry Ford encourages hands-on learning, from children working on the school garden to experimenting with science and technology in the STEM-inspired “makerspace.” Students move on to Kennedy Middle, which takes another B from Niche and works in partnership with the Boys and Girls Club of the Peninsula for after-school enrichment. The final step in primary education can be taken at Woodside High, ranked with an A on Niche and graded with a 9 out of 10 on GreatSchools for college readiness.
The main thoroughfare of Route 84 borders the neighborhood, and it feeds directly into the Bayshore Freeway. Staumbaugh Heller is only a few blocks away from the Redwood City BART train station, and there are several bus stops scattered around the neighborhood. While the composition of Staumbaugh Heller is mainly residential and office space, it’s got downtown Redwood City right next door. That means immediate access to not only the essential stops of grocery stores, national banks and medical centers, but also locally owned businesses. Downtown Redwood City has cute cafes, unique boutiques and fantastic restaurants at every turn. Hang out at the modern outdoor bar of Blacksmith and order signature drinks with friends or sit at the heated patio of Milagros Latin Kitchen for some Jalisco-region Mexican fare.
The go-to for outdoor recreation is Hoover Park, located at the east of the neighborhood off Spring Street. It’s an excellent place for taking the kids to the playground or picnicking in the open field, and they have a seasonal swimming pool available for the community. There’s also a basketball court, along with soccer and baseball fields that stay bright even after dusk once the fluorescent lights flick on. If you’ve moved into the neighborhood with your dog at your side, there’s a place for them to romp around, too. The Main Street Agility Dog Park provides a safe area for pups to run around and interact with the obstacles set up. You’ve also got plenty of options for indoor activity, from popular gyms such as 24 Hour Fitness to independent yoga studios.
If considering a move to Redwood City, Staumbaugh Heller is a great way to get near the action while enjoying some residential peace.
