A quiet Reno neighborhood in the shadow of Peavine Peak

Situated at Reno’s northwest corner, the aptly named Northgate neighborhood is where urbanized Washoe County meets the prominent Peavine Peak. “People love the mountain views you get from that side of town,” says Realtor Soni Jackson with Sotheby’s International Realty. Northgate’s quiet atmosphere and sweeping views of the Sierra Nevada contribute to its popularity among hiking enthusiasts, Renoites with work-from home jobs and new families looking for a tranquil alternative to downtown.

Hilly hiking and golfing in Northgate

Northgate’s location in the shadow of Peavine Peak provides manifold opportunities to explore Washoe County’s wealth of nature. Realtor Harmony Steingrebe with Coldwell Banker Realty says, “From a location standpoint, you’re right on the cusp of Reno’s housing developments, so you have lots of trails that go behind Peavine Peak. That whole hill is open for all your offroad vehicles and lots of hiking, as well as open land.” This nearly 8,300-foot-tall peak was once a major focus of Reno’s mining industry, but it has since become a prime destination for hikers seeking to enjoy its views of the Sierra Nevada, the Virginia Range, Reno and even the state capital of Carson City 32 miles south. Las Brisas Park and Sierra Vista Park each offer recreational activities just around the corner from residential areas; while Sierra Vista features several miles of hilly trails, Las Brisas is known for its playground. The Terrace Sports Complex in the neighborhood has baseball, softball, football and soccer fields. “Depending on where you are, Somersett is close by, and you don’t have to live there to join the club and take part in all those amenities,” Jackson says. The Somersett Golf & Country Club, situated in the neighboring community of Somersett, features an 18-hole course designed by 1992 U.S. Open winner Tom Kite in addition to a fine dining restaurant.

A quiet, yet growing community

Because of its location among Reno’s hilly outskirts, Northgate presents unique allures to both homebuyers and developers. “The biggest appeal for buyers looking in that area is that Northgate is one of the original zones in Reno,” Jackson says. “It has a very strong school district, mature landscaping with big trees and more shade than the parts of Reno that have a high-desert feel.” Northgate’s streets feature a mixture of Spanish Revival, ranch-style and New Traditional home styles. Properties with between 1,000 and 2,500 square feet tend to sell for between $380,000 and $820,000, while those between 2,500 and 3,650 square feet have attained sale prices between $700,000 and $1.1 million. “The homes are a bit older but have a charm to them that lots of families and people starting out love,” Jackson says.

Comfort food is king in Northgate

McQueen Crossings, located off the major thoroughfare of Robb Drive, serves as Northgate’s main shopping center. Here, a Raley’s supermarket covers residents’ grocery needs, while a CVS and Pet Station offer additional conveniences. Stone Valley Drive branches off from Rob Drive and is home to an outpost of Peg’s Glorified Ham N Eggs, a staple of Reno living. This family-owned restaurant serves up Hawaiian, Mexican and American breakfast staples like pancakes, fried spam and chorizo omelettes. Other restaurant options include Burger Me! - a local go-to for comfort foods - and Doughboys Donuts.

A temple sits among Northgate's hilly skyline

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ Reno Nevada Temple, founded in 2000, serves over 25,000 congregants and is a prominent local landmark due to its hilltop location in the neighborhood. Two Protestant churches, Grace church and Calvary Chapel, are also located within this vast neighborhood.

Access to downtown and the university

Northgate is connected to downtown Reno by Mae Anne Avenue, which connects commuters to both the McCarran Loop and Interstate 80. The city’s downtown entertainment district and its MidTown artistic hub both sit within 7 miles east of Northgate. “All of northwest Reno is very close to shopping, grocery stores and restaurants, and you have access to a lot of downtown Reno,” Jackson says. “You also have quick access to the University of Nevada, and investors buy in northwest Reno because it’s easy to rent out properties.”

The Washoe County Regional Transportation Commission does have a bus line that services the community. The Reno-Tahoe International Airport is about 10 miles southeast. The Renown Regional Medical Center is about 7 miles to the east.
