Self-governing city within St. Matthews boundary’s

Surrounded by St. Matthews on all sides sits the small city of Richlawn, one of many self-governing home class cities scattered throughout Louisville that has its own mayor and government. “It’s a cozy little neighborhood,” says Matthew Brotzge, mayor of Richlawn for the past two years. The city of Richlawn is cushioned between two busy roads, Westport and Shelbyville, but large trees block out nearby traffic noises while streetlamp’s line the roads with foot-tall road signs on every corner. “The neighbors are friendly and it’s a good, quiet place to live.” The city is two blocks comprising of three streets, with less than 500 people living in the area. “It’s so small that saying you are from Richlawn is too specific,” says Neal Cox, Principal Broker with Judah Real Estate Group for the past seven years. “Most people say they are from St. Matthews. It’s where everything, school, shopping, dining, happens.”

Homes with upgrades and a fireplace

Within Richlawn, many homes are Cape Cod Revivals or Colonial Revival, with a few ranch homes built in the 1950s scattered throughout. Cape Cod homes can sell between $245,000 and almost $500,000. Colonial Revivals can sell between $340,000 and $530,000. These large ranges depend on if upgrades, such as kitchen or bathroom, were made and the number of bedrooms and bathrooms. Many homes were built in the 1940s and 50s and have a median price of $407,500. The outside of homes tend to have brick or vinyl-sidings and indoor-fireplaces, both wood-burning and electric, are not an uncommon amenity.

Many culinary options within two miles

Shelbyville Road is the main drag for St. Matthews and has many restaurants and bars along its route. “I rarely go the same place twice,” says Brotzge. “There is so much to try out.” Culinary choices include Half-Peach Bakery and Café, a Vegan bakery located less than a mile from Richlawn, for custom cakes and cupcakes. Señora Arepas, just over half a mile away and serves Venezuelan food such as arepas with pernil, safrina and churrasco. Cox describes it as phenomenal and absolutely amazing. Mall St. Matthews is a little over a mile away and has over 120 stores.

Nearby St. Matthews happenings and events

“We are a small community, but we are surrounded by St. Matthews, which is kind of the hub of entertainment,” says Brotzge. “It’s a pretty active area.” Residents can spend time at the Cinemark movie theater at Mall St. Matthews, just over a mile east. For residents who enjoy football, Saints Pizza Pub & Sky Bar claims to be Louisville’s official Green Bay Packers Fan Club, and will open the second story Sky Bar for day games. St. Matthews also has Potato Festival in August, showcasing everything spud related.

In-school orchestra and college-credit opportunities

Children in Richlawn typically begin school at St. Matthews Elementary School for kindergarten through fifth grade. The school received a B-minus from Niche. Students have the opportunity to participate in at-school orchestra and drama club after school. Westport Middle School, offers sixth to eighth graders the opportunity to participate in a Montessori program, where the ideal atmosphere is one where students learn at their own pace. The school received a C-plus on Niche. Students can attend Waggener High School from ninth to twelfth grade. The school has a student-teacher ratio of 14-to-1 and earned a C on Niche. While there, students have the opportunity to participate in dual credits with local universities such as the University of Louisville.

Playgrounds and nearby creek with ducks

Open from dawn to dusk, the 28-acre Brown Park is a little over a mile south and has a large, covered pavilion with picnic tables, play areas for children and trails for walkers and joggers. Middle Fork Beargrass Creek runs through the middle of the park, where many waterfowl, such as duck and geese, can be spotted.

Between two busy roads and a railway crossing

Richlawn is between Westport and Shelbyville Road and can sometimes experience a lot of traffic between these two busy roads. A little over a mile to the east is the entrance to Interstate 264, which loops around Louisville. Hubbards Lane, which borders the city on the east side, has a railway crossing north of the neighborhood and can result in long wait times for vehicles.

Important to Know

Traffic going to and from Mall St. Matthews and Oxmoor Center can be slow Saturday afternoon and evenings. “They are the biggest and nicest shopping malls in the city.” Cox says. Christmas traffic to the shopping areas can get backed up onto I-264.
