Students in Laurel Park fall within the West Contra Costa Unified School District. John F. Kennedy High School operates in the neighborhood’s northwest section, less than a 15-minute walk from most residents. Around 850 students attend Kennedy High, which has a C-minus from Niche. High schoolers can choose from several career pathway options, including information technology, healthcare, visual arts and building and construction. Stege Elementary operates about three blocks directly south of Laurel Park and has a C-minus from Niche. Fred T. Kennedy High is home to the Richmond Swim Center, an indoor-outdoor aquatic facility that's open to the public and is popular even when the Bay Area is at its chilliest. On warmer days, residents can visit State Court Park, which fills over 2 acres with baseball and softball fields, a playground and tall, mature trees providing picnic-friendly shade. Meanwhile, John F. While there aren't any businesses or restaurants here, Laurel Park residents don't have to go far to find the everyday necessities. A Safeway supermarket, clothing stores like Ross, a Skechers outlet, and other retailers lie just across Interstate-80 to the east. Locally owned restaurants include El Mono, a Peruvian eatery known for its paella and beef stir fry. Its dining room hosts live music every Friday and Saturday. Laurel Park sits between Interstates 80 and 580 in southeast Richmond, about a mile north of Richmond Inner Harbor. It's also very close to a Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) station, offering 20-minute train rides to downtown Oakland and about a 40-minute ride to downtown San Francisco. Crime is a concern in Laurel Park. The neighborhood gets a 6-out-of-10 crime score from CAP Index, with motor vehicle theft sticking out as one of the most frequent offenses. Richmond city officials are trying to reduce crime with new initiatives like the Office of Neighborhood Safety and the Community Police Review Commission. These moves have been credited with helping the city drastically reduce its once-high homicide rate by more than 50%.
