Santa Fe was once mostly populated by industrial warehouses and run-down homes, but the neighborhood is turning around thanks to a little TLC from the community and local government. “I’m seeing a lot more pride in the neighborhood and people really working on the houses,” says Catherine Krueger, a Realtor with The Agency who has been selling homes in the Bay Area for 24 years. “Houses are very kept up now, and the city is also doing quite a bit to redo the roads, parks and playgrounds.”
The area is full of townhouses and split-level bungalows outfitted with Spanish Revival details like curved doorways, patios and shaded porches splashed with bright colors like pink, yellow and blue. Residents plant gardens along their fenced-in yards, lining the sidewalks with greenery and blooming flowers. A smaller property between 1,000 and 1,500 square feet can cost between $160,000 and $285,000 while homes with 4 bedrooms and more square footage can reach $750,000.
Families can send their children to the West Contra Costa Unified School District. Local schools include Washington or Nystrom elementary schools, DeJean Middle School and John F. Kennedy High School, all of which score a C-minus on Niche. Kennedy High School students have the option to enroll in four career academies in Information Technology, Health Careers, Building and Construction for specialized training as they earn their diploma.
Despite beginning as an industrial area, Sante Fe has no shortage of green space and natural beauty. Hurlbut Tennis & Garden Park, next to the Richmond Plunge swimming complex along Richmond Avenue, has tennis and bocce ball courts, picnic and barbecue areas and on-site sustainability gardens. Community members can tend to sunflowers, pick blackberries and feed chickens at the Happy Lot Farm and Garden on First Street. Miller Knox Regional Shoreline, 3 miles south in the Brickyard Cove area, is a nearly 300-acre bayside park with a secluded swimming beach, fishing pier and a model railroad museum. The neighborhood is 2 miles away from the Sante Fe Channel, where boaters make use of to the local marina.
When the weekend rolls around, community members head to Cutting Boulevard just off Interstate 580 to enjoy a meal at The Backyard, which opens its doors on Thursday morning and serves burgers and beer until Sunday night. Local musicians also perform on the restaurant’s stage throughout the weekend. Another neighborhood favorite is Masa Tamales and Tacos on Park Place, which plates up homemade tamales stuffed with meat, veggies and even fruit alongside other Mexican staples like tacos and tostadas. For dinner at home, neighbors get their everyday shopping done at two nearby J&S Market locations on Ohio and Bissell avenues.
Sante Fe is just off Richmond Parkway and Interstate 80, but braving the highway is far from the only way to explore the surrounding Bay Area. “If you’re going to San Francisco you can take BART or the Ferry, which is great and well-used by people around the area who do not want to be commuting on 80,” Krueger says. Bay Area Rapid Transit – known throughout the region as BART – Amtrak or the AC Transit Local Bus Lines, also has stations centrally located in the Sante Fe neighborhood, making it easy to explore the local community, visit nearby cities or run errands, all while returning home safely to this growing community.
