Historic homes and river views in Wilton
Sitting on the north banks of the James River, two miles west of downtown Richmond, is the historic Wilton neighborhood. This neighborhood is home to the Wilton House, a Georgian-style manor house constructed in 1753 on what was previously a sprawling, 2,000-acre tobacco plantation across the river. Owned by one of the most affluent families in Virginia at the time, the Wilton House hosted public figures such as George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. In 1934, commercial development threatened to demolish the historic home, but it was instead deconstructed and rebuilt in what is now known as the Wilton neighborhood. Today, the Wilton House operates as a museum that is open to the public.

Spacious homes and private wooded properties
The spacious and stately homes in Wilton were primarily built between the 1920s and ‘50s and are tucked back on sprawling lots surrounded by mature landscaping. The ample space between properties and wooded surroundings offers a sense of privacy and seclusion to homeowners. Despite the privacy, however, Wilton maintains a neighborly community feel. “You’ll see people out talking to one another, pushing baby strollers or working in the yard,” says Katharine Walton, Realtor at Hometown Realty. “It’s a friendly community.” Strolling the streets of Wilton, you’ll find a stunning array of unique architectural styles, such as brick and slate Colonials with symmetrical window designs and Tudors with steeply pitched roofs and half-timbering. Most houses in Wilton have long, paved driveways that lead to detached garages, while some have horseshoe driveways in the front yard. According to Walton, many of these homes have been renovated and expanded since they were initially built. “People love the historic charm of these homes, but they need the modern space and amenities,” says Walton. These properties range in price from $900,000 to $2.5 million. According to Walton, demand is high and homes in this area often sell within a few days on the market. As with the entire Richmond area, inventory in Wilton is extremely low.
