Cross residents enjoy simple living on Lake Moultrie
Along the shores of Lake Moultrie is the rural community of Cross. The community is named for John Cross, a 19th-century landowner who purchased 500 acres and developed a thriving agricultural community. "Cross locals enjoy simple living,", says Realtor and lifelong Berkely County resident Tori Beach Williams, "easy access to hunting and fishing around the lake while still being close to civilization. Lakefront estates and rural homesteads are just a short drive away from quaint local stores, schools and lakeside dining.
Tranquil country homes and waterfront houses
Locals live along meandering country roads fringed by local farmland and dense forests. Most homebuyers in the area were "looking for more room to do what they want," says Realtor Tori Beach Williams, a lifelong Berkely County resident. She goes on to say "people come to get away while still being close to the city. There's everything from campers on the lakefront to waterfront estates." Cross's residential landscape is a mix of waterfront homes and rural bungalows. has several undeveloped land plots for those wanting to establish their own homestead. More secluded rural homes are priced between $100,000 to the mid-$400,000s. Properties along Lake Moultrie tend to be more expensive, running between $500,000's to as high as $830,000.

Lake Moultrie bass fishing and paddle boating
Locals on the waterfront can go for a swim and cast a line out from private docks. Whether biking by the lakeshore or reeling in a fresh catch, Lake Moultrie offers plenty of opportunities for locals enjoy the outdoors. This lake is the third largest in South Carolina, and springtime brings dozens of anglers looking to catch largemouth bass and other large fish. A canal runs from Lake Moultrie into Lake Marion, where locals cast lines out from the shore or head out in fishing boats. Kayakers and paddle boaters shove off from the paved boat launch at Spiers Landing Park, with miles of Lake Marion's shorelines and numerous islands to paddle around. Locals also shoot hoops on the park's basketball court and relax in picnic areas by the lakeshore. Small and big game hunting is also a frequent local activity, state hunting and seasonal guidelines permitting.
