Rural charm with easy access to Medina in Ridgeway
Ridgeway offers a rural landscape of farms, meadows and woods in Orleans County of upstate New York. While Ridgeway is all about country living, it’s connected to the village of Medina , a small but vibrant community along the Erie Canal where locals go to shop, dine out and attend community events. It’s also halfway between Buffalo and Rochester , and a short drive to Lake Ontario.
Homes sit on large lots along country roads
Houses in Ridgeway are built along the town’s two main thoroughfares and the long back roads. “When you live out here, it’s hard to conceive that anyone within 10 minutes from you is like a neighbor because our country blocks are 5 miles long. It’s not what people are used to,” says Cheryl Krug-Wirth, associate broker with Woodroe Realty, who grew up in Ridgeway. Many houses sit on an acre or more of land, some with more than 50 acres. They include a variety of homes, ranging from century-old farmhouses to ranch-style homes and small bungalows, with prices starting at $175,000 and reaching up to $400,000. It’s not common for homes to have less than an acre, but the few that do sell for around $145,000 to $175,000.
Ridgeway is served by the Orleans County Sheriff’s Office and has very little crime. The CAP Index Crime Score is 1 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.
Boating and fishing in Glenwood Lake, Lake Ontario and the Erie Canal
Locals enjoy water sports and have plenty of options nearby. “Boating and fishing are a big draw because we’re only a few miles from Lake Ontario,” Krug-Wirth says. “People also like to boat up and down the canal.” It takes less than 20 minutes to get to Lake Ontario. Ridgeway is home to the 92-acre Glenwood Lake, which has a boat ramp and a designated fishing area from the shore. It feeds into the Erie Canal, another popular spot for fishing. Medina Dog Park is right by Glenwood Lake with various obstacles to play on.
A few local stores with more shopping and dining in Medina
Ridgeway has a few stores where locals can shop. Miller’s Bulk Food & Bakery is a family-run grocery store that offers produce, homemade baked goods and a deli that serves sandwiches. Other options include Dollar General and Champs Mini Mart. Locals frequently head to Medina, which has big-box retailers like Aldi and Tractor Supply Co. There are also several restaurants downtown, such as Rudy’s Soda Bar & Café, Country Club Family Restaurant, which serves Greek food, and Fitzgibbons Public House, an Irish pub.
Small class sizes in Medina Central School District
Medina Central School District serves a large portion of Ridgeway. Students may attend Oak Orchard Primary School, which receives a B-minus grade from Niche. They’ll go on to C-plus-graded Clifford Wise Intermediate School, followed by Medina Junior-Senior High School, also graded a C-plus. The combined middle and high school serves about 600 students in grades 7 through 12, and has a student-teacher ratio of 11-to-1.
Parade of Lights and other events in Medina
Locals head to Medina to attend community events. The Medina Parade of Lights is held on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, marking the start of the holiday season. The event has people lined up and down Main Street for a night of parade floats, photos with Santa and fireworks. The Medina Sidewalk Sale is a big summer event, where downtown shops offer discounts and bring their products outside for shoppers to browse.
Equidistant to Buffalo, Rochester and Niagara Falls
State Routes 63 and 104 are the two main highways that intersect in town. They guide the way to Buffalo, Rochester and Niagara Falls. All three are about 45 miles away, which is about an hour drive. Buffalo and Rochester also have international airports.
