The best qualities of suburban living with historical charm

With a thriving commercial district, top-ranked schools, well-maintained parks, year-round events and easy transit into New York, Ridgewood is the quintessential suburb. “It’s perfect for people who still want a bit of cosmopolitan life but with beautiful standalone homes and driveways,” says Laura Gill, local expert and top agent with The Gill Group, Keller Williams Village Square. Most of the area was built up in the 1920s and its well-kept historical charm remains a key draw. There’s a variety of homes on offer including mid-sized colonials on large lots with manicured lawns and old-growth trees. With tons of small businesses and popular community centers, the downtown anchors a close-knit community.

Over a hundred independent eateries

Lining the main commercial blocks between East Ridgewood and Franklin avenues, hundreds of restaurants and shops make for a lively atmosphere. While Cafe 37 serves up New American cuisine in an intimate setting, Lisa's Mediterranean Cuisine specializes in Turkish fare. Two recently established French bakeries Sook and Pierre & Michel have already won over local residents. Roots Steakhouse and Raymond’s, a long-established breakfast place, are reliable options. Felina is a swanky restaurant with a rooftop bar. Many noted authors have passed through famous bookstore Bookends. Stop & Shop, Whole Foods and Green Way Markets cover the gamut when it comes to grocery stores.

Summer streets and holiday festivities

On summer weekends, downtown streets are closed off for open-air dining and live music. Several homes mount elaborate haunted houses on Halloween. During the holidays, there are menorah and Christmas tree lighting ceremonies that bring out most residents.

Picturesque prewar colonials and quaint bungalows

A handful of postwar condos near downtown start at $500,000. One and half-bath Cape Cods range from $700,000 to $1 million. Four-bedroom colonials with additional amenities like pools are priced at $1.2 million to $1.8 million. Grand 4,000 square-foot Tudor mansions or slightly more modest properties with extensive acreage fetch between $2 million and $3.5 million. “Most of the homes have distinct historical characteristics which is something buyers seek out,” Gill says. “Cookie-cutter millennium mansions are harder to come by in Ridgewood,”
