With little more than a post office, a fire station and a community center, Weott epitomizes small-town living in the mountains of Northern California. This town of around 300 residents sits at the edge of sprawling redwood forests in southern Humboldt County, hours from the nearest major metropolitan area. “This is where people are coming to get away from the city. They just want to be closer to nature. It’s really beautiful out here, it’s laid back and it’s warmer than the coast,” says Realtor Kim Quintal of Exp Realty’s Quintal Realty Group, who works out of nearby Fortuna.
Weott got its start as a logging camp in the early 20th century, where redwood trees were being carved into railroad ties for a nearby railroad. The town was hit by two major floods, first in 1955 and again in 1964, both of which caused widespread damage. The flood of 1964 practically washed the town away and had to be rebuilt at a higher elevation. The flooding was blamed on clearcutting that had taken place along area waterways.
Humboldt Redwoods State Park
Weott is bordered by Humboldt Redwoods State Park, an historic, 53,000-acre park that is home to some of the oldest redwoods in the world, some of which are more than 350 feet tall. It’s also where visitors can see the Stratosphere Giant, the world’s fourth tallest living redwood. It boasts more than 100 miles of hiking trails that crisscross deep, dense forestland. The Eel River is walking distance from many Weott homes and has long been a popular and scenic destination for fishing, boating and swimming. “If you’re local you know all the good swimming spots,” Quintal says.
Homes on narrow country lanes
Homes in Weott are on narrow roads shaded by heavy tree canopy. Midcentury ranch style homes, mobile homes and some more recently built homes sit on lots ranging from as small as 5,000 square feet to more than a quarter-acre. Some homes are perched on steep hillsides with views of the surrounding mountains. Country lanes turn from pavement to gravel as they rise higher into the forested slopes above the town. “There are people out here who want to live off the grid. In a lot of places out in the hills, you might not have internet, and you might have your own water source,” Quintal says. Prices in the area range from around $200,000 to $500,000.
Head to Myers Flat for small-town shopping and dining
Weott residents will have to get in the car and drive to get to the nearest restaurants, shops and grocery stores. The nearest grocery store, Redwoods Market & Deli, is about 10 miles south in the town of Myers Flat. There’s also The Daily Grind coffee shop, a cozy stop for espresso drinks and smoothies. Evenings can be spent at Myers Flat Saloon, a dive bar and pool hall that is unabashedly proud to announce that it has working air conditioning, a fact noted on the sign outside its entrance. For everything else, it’s about 27 miles to Garberville, the largest little town in southern Humboldt, where locals head for groceries, specialty shops and a variety of eateries.
Public schools are a trek
Weott students will have to make a bit of trek to get to school. Redway Elementary School is about 26 miles away, and Miranda Junior High School and South Fork High School are about 18 miles away. All three schools earn B-minus ratings from Niche. South Fork High is known for its lively varsity football games.
Easy access to the Pacific Coast Highway
Weott residents can utilize two major roadways that traverse the town. The Avenue of the Giants is a scenic roadway that winds for 31 miles through the region’s giant redwoods and sequoias. State Route 101, also known as the Pacific Coast Highway, also cuts through town, offering a speedy way to get to nearby hamlets and villages. It’s about 45 miles to Eureka, the largest city in Humboldt County with around 26,000 residents. It’s about 230 miles from San Francisco, the nearest major metropolitan area. Residents in need of medical care can head to Jerold Phelps Community Hospital in Garberville.
Increased risk of wildfires
Southern Humboldt, including the area around Weott, is at a high risk for wildfires. In August 2020, the August Complex fire burned more than 1 million acres and more than 900 structures in this part of Northern California. It is among the largest wildfires ever recorded in the state.
