Sparsely-settled city with large lots and up-and-coming downtown
Riverton is a small town with a population of just under 11,000. It’s a sparse suburb but it has both city and rural amenities. Locals can check out the hometown restaurants and retail downtown while having homes with acreage. “People move here for the wide open spaces and small-town values,” says Tiffany Hartpence, associate broker at Home Source Realty. “Since it’s Wyoming, there’s a low cost of living. It’s a simple and comfortable lifestyle.” Riverton was a gathering spot for the 1830 and 1838 Rendezvous, which were trade meetings between Native Americans, mountain men and trappers, before becoming a city in 1906. Today, these historical elements are retold through the city's annual 1838 Rendezvous re-enactment.

Ranchers and split levels on acres of land
Riverton consists primarily of single-family houses on large tracts of land. Near downtown, ranch-style and split-level homes sit on three-quarter acre lots; outside of the city limits are custom homes on five-acre tracts. Buyers can also find land plots in the city that are under a quarter acre. “People that are from out of the area are attracted to the affordable rural homes and acreage options,” Hartpence says. “People can create the family farm, grow a garden, raise animals and sustain a healthy outdoor lifestyle.” Riverton’s median home price is $260,000, nearly $50,000 less than Casper and $130,000 less than Cheyenne.

The Wyoming Heritage Trail, or Rails to Trails, is a 22-mile flat pathway ideal for hiking, biking and jogging. It was once a busy railroad that transported natural resources through Central Wyoming. The Riverton Country Club is toward the city’s outskirts; golfers can play a round of 18 or explore the restaurant and pro shop. Central Wyoming College offers indoor recreation opportunities, including youth sports, adult fitness and specialty programs. Boysen State Park is 36 miles north; it’s popular in summertime for its water activities, like swimming, boating, fishing and camping.

Hometown eateries on Main Street and Federal Boulevard
Riverton has a diverse food scene along Main Street (Highway 26) and Federal Boulevard (Highway 789). “Riverton has become a viable place to do business,” Hartpence says. “The last five years, they’ve recruited lots of retail, restaurants, manufacturing and medical.” Main Street has a walkable section on its east side where visitors and residents can park and explore the restaurants and stores. Diners can find coffee shops, bars, Mexican or American eateries and national chains. The walkable part of Main Street has locally owned stores like boutiques, services and thrift shops. Riverton residents can enjoy two carnivals every year. The Fremont County Spring Carnival is the prequel to the big Fremont County Fair. At the end of May, the smaller event features livestock, fair foods and carnival rides. The main fair stretches for eight days and offers rodeos, livestock and youth shows. 1838 Mountain Man Rendezvous is an annual re-enactment of the trade. It’s also a way for visitors to learn about the historical site with the American mountain men.
