Access to Roanoke and Vinton
Located on the eastern border of the Roanoke city limits, Mecca Garden enjoys the spacious lots and thicker greenery that come with being on the edge of town. Still, the neighborhood of about 600 homes isn’t a remote area. It’s within 4 miles of iconic Roanoke spots, including a walkable downtown and the 89-foot-tall Roanoke Star atop Mill Mountain. It’s even closer to the town of Vinton, which is half a mile to the south and has a population of 8,000 people — less than a tenth of Roanoke’s. Vinton’s tiny downtown and decades-old festivals offer a small-town vibe distinct from Roanoke, says Landon Johnson, an agent with Five Stone Realty Group who grew up in Vinton. Residents of Mecca Gardens get to live between both communities.
The Mill Mountain Star has an overlook where visitors can see downtown Roanoke.
Downtown Vinton is within walking distance of the neighborhood and has restaurants and shops.

Vinton’s revitalized downtown
A mile-long stretch of U.S. Route 460 borders the neighborhood's north side and serves as a Roanoke thoroughfare lined with businesses. On one end are a pair of antique shops, while the other has shopping centers with Dollar Tree, Planet Fitness and a few independent retailers such as Big Lick Comics. Shoppers can grab groceries from Kroger, a mile east of Route 460. A resident’s best bet for eating out is to take Gus Nicks Boulevard into downtown Vinton. There are more than 10 local spots for meals, ice cream or coffee in the small downtown. New businesses have been revitalizing downtown in the last few years, including when Virginia sandwich chain Macado’s opened a restaurant in a former library building in 2018, Johnson says. In 2023, American restaurant Pollard 107 South opened in a shuttered theater, providing a spot for a sit-down meal next door to Twin Creek Brewing Co., the county’s first craft brewery.
The neighborhood is close to many retail options and boutiques.
Twin Creeks Brewing is a popular gathering spot for craft beer enthusiasts in the area.

The April event celebrates the return of warm spring weather, with bands jamming from a stage at the Vinton Farmers’ Market, performers walking tightropes on Jackson Avenue and a parade marching through downtown. In October, the Vinton Fall Festival brings food vendors and more live music to downtown, along with more than 100 craft vendors. Between April and October, the Vinton Farmers’ Market is open from Tuesday to Saturday.

Near Vinton’s biggest park
Two public parks border Mecca Gardens. To the south is Vinyard Park, Vinton’s largest. Its 86 acres provide space for baseball, football and soccer fields, as well as a playground. Anglers often reel in fish from Glade Creek, which flows through the park. Thrasher Park on the west side of Mecca Gardens is smaller, but it has one of only two dog parks in the city. Residents can venture just over a mile out of the neighborhood to swim at Fallon Park’s public pool between June and August or bike around the cyclocross course, a grass and dirt track with obstacles that force cyclists to dismount and run through on foot.
Vineyard Park is the largest park in the neighborhood featuring sports fields and open spaces.
Glade Creek Dog Run features a spacious, fenced area where dogs can run freely and play.
